Haunted Sites of Maryland

 

Adelphi
      Paint Branch Home- This home used to be a slave home built in 1700 or 1800's. There have been numerous sightings by staff over the years.....The home is now used as an assisted living home for the elderly. You'll hear and see ghosts from the far and not so distant past.
Anteitam
      Anteitam Battlefield - The battlefields are reported to be haunted by the ghosts of several Civil War soldiers killed in battle.
Baltimore
      Fells Point- This area is reportedly haunted by two ghosts. One is thought to be either Edward or William Fell, brothers who founded this town. The apparition is seen wearing 18th century clothing while he walks along Shakespeare Street late at night. The other ghost haunts the Whistling Oyster restaurant. The spirit is as yet unidentified.
      Gridiron Club- The apparitions of an old lady and the slaves she kept have been seen walking the grounds. Apparently, residents of the house have seen the slaves in chains.
      Druid Ridge Cemetery-Former home of the infamous Black Aggie. An old statue that had red glowing eyes, and has freaked out numerous people. They reportedly have found dead people in front of the statue. The statue resided in the basement of the Smithsonian Museum for years.
      Club Charles/Zodiac- 1724 & 1726 N. Charles St. is the site of numerous paranormal activity at this Restaurant/Bar. Some reported activity includes: footsteps, shadows, a small white dog and bottles moving.
      Ft. Garrison
-This fort was built in 1693 and used during the revolutionary days. It appears that there are 3 'resident ghosts' that remain here.
      Fort McHenry - The Fort was used throughout history in guarding Baltimore, Maryland. Many stories of ghosts and ghostly activity include: a shadowy figure marching along the parapets, an evil spirit in the hallway leading to the bathrooms, floating or moving furniture, tour guides during the Ghost Tour being surrounded in unearthly light, and voices heard by employees after the Fort has been closed to visitors. The stories are well known by local residents and many people who worked at the Fort or visited it can attest to these occurances.
      Edgar Allen Poe's House- 203 N. Amity St. Open 12-3 daily for tours. Many apparitions and noises have been heard/seen here, particularly the apparition of a woman is still unidentified. She is descibed as a rather large woman with grey hair and dressed in 19th century attire. Much of the activity in the house takes place in Poe's attic room and his grandmother's former bedroom.
      Locust Point- The ghost of an English woman has haunted a house here since her death before the Civil War. She was apparently found dead in a rocking chair, holding her two small children in her arms. They all died from starvation, due to the woman being a bit too proud to ask for help. Her form is seen in a rocking chair by the front window in the early evening hours. It is said that the third step of the stiarcase is unusually cold. No one can carry a candle past this point without the flame going out. Some tenants have been slapped in the face while others hear crying in the house.
      Perry Hall Mansion- The owners died in the house on Oct 31 in the 1700's. Since then on Halloween every year people go in and get thrown out windows, lights turn on(no electricity), film doesn't develope, video cameras malfunction.
      USF Constellation- This frigate is haunted by several ghosts. The first is that of a sailor in an old style uniform who appears on the forcastle deck. Apparently he visits so much that the a Navy Commander was able to get a picture of him. The second ghost is believed to be sailor Neil Harvey. He was brutally killed by his crew for falling asleep while on watch way back in 1700. He was strapped to a gun and blown apart. The last ghost is said to be Captain Thomas Truxtum, the man who ordered the execution of Neil Harvey.
      Westminster Churchyard- Since the year 1944, a dark figure has been reported to visit the grave of Edgar Allen Poe. The figure id dressed in a black frock with a black fedora and a scarf that covers its face. The apparition appears every January 19th to deliver 3 red roses and a bottle of cognac. Crowds have gathered to witness this event, but still no one has been able to identify the apparition.
Bladensburg
      Dueling Grounds- Over fifty duels were fought here. The ghosts of those who lost the fights are said to still roam these grounds.

Caroline County
      Patty Cannon's House-Patty Cannon, a known kidnapper/murderer of freed slaves haunts her former house. Some creepy things supposedly happen up in her "torture" room upstairs. Footsteps are also heard.

Charles County
      The Mudd Farmhouse- After Dr. Mudd was presidentially pardoned for his suspected role in the death of President Lincoln, he returned back to his farmhouse only to live a life he could never rebuild. Knocks at the door, footsteps, and an apparition have all been witnessed here.
Clinton
      Surratt House and Tavern- The ghost of former owner Mary Surratt has been seen on the wide front porch. Disembodied voices of men can be heard in the back of the bar. This is where John Wilkes Booth and David Herold stopped after the assassination of President Lincoln. The apparition of an unidentified man has also been seen roaming the halls of the building, which is now a museum. An apparition of a girl has supposedly been seen straightening beds here.
Drawbridge
      Gypsy Ghost- According to local legend, the apparition of a white stallion gallops over the roads here. The rider of the horse is a gypsy man and his lover. The man was killed by his lover's seven brothers because they did not approve of thier sister's impending marriage. The brothers were cursed by the gypsies, for every year for seven years after, one of the brothers died mysteriously. In the 8th year, the woman died while in an unexplained trance. Since then, the apparitions have been seen riding together.
Easton
      Fairview- Visitors report hearing the voices of men among the boxwoods in the garden. These are believe to be related to the apparition of a British sypathizer seen in the back yard of the estate.
      Gross' Coate- The apparition of Aunt Molly Tilghman is seen late at night as she glides down the staircase to unlock the front door. This was a routine of hers, due to her nephew who would stay out late at night, but did not have a key.
Elkridge
      The Lawn- A poltergeist has been reported at this house since 1951. Object are moved or thrown about, doors unloc and lock on thier own, and owners have reported scratching sounds but cannot identify from where.
Ellicott City
      Lilburn- This mansion is haunted by many ghosts. One is a small child heard crying in an upstairs bedroom. Another is that of a little girl in a chiffon dress. Footsteps are heard and the smell of cigar smoke fills the house at times. The activity started up after owner John McGinnis remodled the place in the 1920's.
      Oak Lawn- The building is haunted by the "cooking ghost". Employees report that they often smeel the odor of bacon and eggs frying or fresh soup in thier offices. A rocking chair had been deen rocking on its own for some time and a white fog materialized on the stairway in front of several witnesses.
      The Patapsco Female institute- Is one of the most haunted in the area. It is said that the nuns who worked there started dappling in Satanism and murdered several of the girls in sacrifice. Sometimes at night you can still hear their tortured screams and there is a cold spot at the top of the huge stairs.
      The old firehouse on Main Street - This Firehouse is said to be haunted by a few of the old firemen. Its said that doors slam closed and one of the ghosts has been seen  in the halls while foot steps have been heard with no one walking.
Emmitsburg
      Mt St. Mary's College- The apparition of Rev. Simon Brute' has been reported to follow groups of students along the sidewalks here. There is also poltergeist activity reported in room 252 in the residence hall. Furniture and other items have been witnessed being thrown about the room.
      St. Joseph's College- The ghost of Mother Senton floats through the hallways here. She is most often seen walking with a man carrying a doctor's bag. The woman's college was a hospital during the Civil War. Mother Senton's tomb is located on campus.
Fall River
      Kimwell Nursing home - An old man dressed in a black suit and black top hat has been seen by most of the elderly living there, lights in basement have been known to go on and off by themselves. And also a young blond haired nurse has been seen by the residents, she is known to make them feel better then after days of seeing her they pass away.
Frederick

      Barbara Fritchie House- The house is haunted by the spirit of Barbara Fritchie. Tour guides have reportedly seen the rocking chair rocking, lights on when the place is locked up, and an indentation on her bed, as if someone was sitting there.
      Frederick Historical Society- A woman in a long sleeved, floor length dress has been seen in this building. Usually, employees have seen her ghost sitting on a velvet rocking chair in one of the storage rooms. Old trunks reportedly have moved on their own. Music has been heard coming from a broken Grafanola machine.
      Hood Collge- The oldest building on campus is reportedly haunted by a noisy ghost. Loud laughter and heated conversations can be heard from the top floor of Brobeck Hall. This building was once a tavern when it was built way back in 1868.
      Schifferstadt House- The ghosts of Joseph and Elias Brunner haunt the oldest house in town. They are the ones who built the house in 1750. Thier voices, with a distinctive German accent, are still heard within the house as well as their footsteps.
      Tyler House- A woman who lives in the back 2nd floor apartment reports that the apparition of a stringy hair man walks down the steps from the attic every night around 2:30. He wears what looks like a white robe.
Hagerstown
      Stanford Hall- Two ghosts and a deadly secret room haunt this mansion, built in 1734 by the Mason family. The apparition of a lady, wearing a silk dress and surrounded by a white mist has appeared in a room on the first floor. Another apparition is that of an old man who rolls a barrel of whiskey down the stairway at night. A secret room is rumored to bring disaster to anyone who finds it. The room has been blamed for the deaths of two people who found it, one in 1924 and the second in 1926. Kinda makes you want to go looking, doesn't it?
Hollywood
      St. Andrew's Church Road Bridge- This bridge is reportedly haunted by two woman. One is a young white girls who was apparently hit anf killed by a speeding car. The other ghost is that of a young black girl who's slave quarters were right by the bridge. According to locals, she had killed her owner, who was sexually abusing her. When word got out, a posse got together and followed her to a nearby swamp, where she was killed.
Howard County
      Hell House (Old St Mary's College)- An old all girls school that has been abandoned. People from the area that have been able to go there have seen and heard many spirits while visiting. There is no way of getting into the college without permission.
Kent Co.
      White House Farm- Footsteps, doors closing, and a woman has seen in a nightgown.
      The Restaurant Ghost- There's a small restaurant in Kent Co. that is haunted by a young man. Supposedly he was killed in the upstairs and occasionally talks to customers.
Laurel
      Montpelier Mansion- Reports of our founding fathers haunting this site are plentifull. Apparently, the ghosts of John Adams, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson have been seen walking the grounds. They are reported to have visited frequently during thier lives.
      Oaklands- Built by Richard Snowden some time in the 1700's, this mansion is haunted by several ghosts. The sound of a phantom horse is said to be heard galloping up the driveway at about 10 PM. The front door would open and then close without the help of any living being. The apparition of a young girl has been seen crossing the front yard. The image of a young boy has been seen sitting on the edge of one the beds. The images of a large black woman and another black slave have been seen throughout the mansion. The sounds of footsteps and a woman's crying can be heard all over the mansion.
Leonardtown
      St. Mary's Historical Society- The spirit of suspected witch, Moll Dyer, is thought to haunt a 875 lb. boulder that sits in front of the Historical Society. Way back in the 1700's, the townsflolk blamed Moll for the troubles they were having. Because she lived as a hermit, they thought she was a witch. The townspeople drove her from her home. She was found a few days later, frozen to death knealling on this boulder. When her body was removed, the impressions of her knees and hands were still present. Her hut, which is located along what is now called Moll Dyer's Run, is barren. Her apparition has been seen floating over the land where she had lived. In 1975, the boulder in which she spent her last moments was moved to the Historical Society. Sice then, many people have reported feeling uncomfortable around the rock. Cameras have malfunctioned while trying to take pictures at the stone and many others have reported feeling terrible aches and pains when standing by the rock.
Malden
      Jimmy O'Keefe's Restaurant - A former patron of this Irish Pub who died in a fall down the basement stairs is rumored to be seen sitting in his regular stool. The former patron was called Uncle Buck for his resemblance to John Candy's character in said movie.
Point Lookout   
           Fort Lincoln/Point Lookout Lighthouse - Hundreds of paranormal experiences have been reproted here. Apparently over four thousand Confederate soldiers died here in just two weeks, due to disease, abuse and the poor living conditions. A male ghost, dressed in Civil War attire has been seen guarding the steps to the lighthouse. Pictures taken of the lighthouse have recorded him leaning against the frame at the door. The apparition of a woman has been sighted standing on top of the outside stairway. All kinds of sounds, from footsteps to slamming doors to snoring, have been heard within the building. Voices have been recorder here as well. Voices have said things like " Fire if they get too close" and Let us not take objections." Apparitions of soldiers have been seen along the roads and paths that wind through the park. I've read that the Park Rangers keep track of all of the activity reported to them.
Poolesville
      Annington Manor- An Oregon Senator, Colonal E. D. Baker and a group of soldiers reportedly haunt the battleground here along the C&O canal. These men are buried in the small national cemetery on the premises. The place has been nicknamed Haunted House Bend due to so many sightings.
Potomac
  Harker Prep School- Footsteps have been heard upstairs, and a dark figure has been seen walking the upper floors by students as well as facalty. The ghost has not been identified as yet. The place was built by Henry Clagett and has been used as a tavern and a trading post.
Snow Hill
      Furnace Town-The apparition of a black slave guards the remains of a blast furnace he worked. Sampson Hat worked the large coal furnace at the Nassawango Iron Works from when it opened in 1832 to when it closed in 1847. He refuesed to leave town when everyone else had abandoned it. Sampson lived here until his death at the young age of 107. His last wish was to be buried in Furnace Town. Unfortunately, the local almshouse wouldn't honor this last request. Locals believe he will continue to haunt the area untill his body is laid to rest in Furnace town.
Towson
      The Hampton Mansion- This historic mansion was previously owned by the Ridgely family. Different members of the family haunt this mansion. A falling chandelier can be heard crashing to the floor, only to be found still in place. According to legend, this meant that someone in the family was about to die. Several times the sound of the chandelier has been heard, and then the lady of the house soon passes away. The National Park Service insists that it is not haunted.
Upper Marlboro
      Mount Airy Plantation- About six ghosts have been identified here at this mansion. In the 1930's the London Society for Psychical Research investigated the house. They found that the spirit of Elizabeth Calvert haunts the house, searching for jewels she had hidden. The ghost of Eleanor Calvert apparently disapproves of anyone using the palor because she is said to keep it locked. A yound lady has been seen waiting for her lover, who is said to have been forbidden to see her. The apparition of an elderly woman wonders around the house waking people up in the middle of the night. A man in a red shirt has been witnessed floating outside a second floor window. The last ghost is that of a horseman who has been seen waiting at the front door.
Westminster
   
Avondale Bed and Breakfast- Built on the old property of a Mr. Legh Master. It has been haunted by his spirit for over 200 years. He appears either riding a black horse or walking alone through the woods by his former house. In the 1930's the skeletons of a woman and a child were found behind a fireplace at Avondale. Perhaps this is the reason he cannot rest. Today he is known by the locals as the Ghost of Furnace Hills.
      Cockeys Tavern - The ghost of a Civil War soldier haunts the center staircase of the tavern. He is blamed for the moving of pictures on the walls. The sounds of footsteps and glasses clanking together are heard by employees and visiors.
      The Old Opera House - is said to be haunted by the ghost of Marshall Buell, who had given a comedic performance  here and was murdered on the back exit after his show due to the anti-Union jokes he had made.His headless apparition is seen on the stairs outside behind the theatre.
