Cats

Elvira

Elvira

Elvira was the oldest cat here. She came with the house. When we first moved in she used to winter with us and summer somewhere else. We spotted her in front of a house on a street about a mile away a few times during the summer. We figure those people must have moved away, because back in '95 she went away for her usual summer but came back only a couple of weeks later. She did this for two years, then just stopped going away at all. She was with us until May 30, 2005 when she passed on..

Shift

Shift

Shift is one of our older cats and isn't exactly "cuddly," though when he decides it's time for us to pay attention to him, he's quite insistent about it. He's also our only cat to take any interest in the ferrets. He seems to especially like our rather large boy Quasimodo, but he chases the others about as well. He can't fit in the places they can, and he still can find all three of them trying to play with him to be a bit much. My older son found Quasi and Shift running around in the kitchen one morning, despite the cage still being closed up tight. We still haven't figured out how Quasi got out, but we suspect the cat helped him somehow.

Bunny

Bunny

Bunny wasn't supposed to stay with us. My wife got her as a captured feral and put her in our cat room/laundry, where she was supposed to stay just long enough to get used to people then move on to a real home. But she wasn't adjusting. Probably captured a bit too old. Anyway, I got interested in just what it would take to get past her fears and started spending a LOT of time in the cat room. I'd go in there to read or take a break and so forth. She eventually got to where she'd come out and eat even if I was in there. And from time to time, I'd reach into the corner where she was balled up hiding and pet her. Eventually, she got used to me to the extent that she enjoyed the petting. I then arranged things so she had to come near me to get to her food, a bit closer every couple of days. After she'd go eat and run back to the corner, I'd reach in and pet her. She started to wait just short of the corner for her petting after eating, and then later, she'd stop where I was sitting to get her petting after eating. Eventually, she was coming to me just to get petted. After some long time, we finally got her to come out of the cat room and see me in the kitchen, then down the hall, and finally in my office. The above picture is her sitting on my desk. She'll still run when things don't look just right to her, but she's given up on the cat room and socializes with the cats and dogs just fine. She even sleeps with the guinea pig sometimes.
