Enterprise Data Management is supported by on-line management processing (OLMP).  OLMP is a data management function and OLMP data resources and tools are not generally available to the business user.  There are four distinct components that fall under Enterprise Data Management

  • Evolution and management of the enterprise/application database pair.
  • Creation and incremental updates of data marts and data warehouses.
  • Imports from and exports to external sources and the archive.
  • Housekeeping activities such as reorganization, backup, recovery and restore.

These processes are documented in detail in the Database and Data Warehouse sections under Methodology.  The business process models included in this section are for the purposes of process documentation and presentations to technical managers and peers.

The documentation and case study, available in the Downloads section, describes the enterprise evolution process in detail and provides beginning to end examples of how the data quality analysis and data migration of a legacy database is accomplished.

The data warehouse section describes, in detail, how to design a data mart and evolve the data warehouse.  The methodology presented assumes that the data warehouse is being developed from the enterprise/application database pair.  However, if the data marts and warehouses are being built from legacy databases, the methodology will still work very well.
