ASSEMBLY OF GOD

General
   -Organized in 1914 in Springfield , Ill. It came into existence as a result of the Pentecostal revival in the late 19th and early
     20th centuries.
   -Evangelical in tradition with an emphasis on the manifestation of  Spiritual gifts.
   -Ministry includes
         -Worship and obedience to God
         -Edification and maturation of believers.
         -Personal regeneration toward unbelievers.
  -Government is a mixture of Presbyterian and congregational
  -Very high involvement in missions.

Doctrine
 -Basically they believe that the experience of the 120 on the day of Pentecost known as the  baptism of the Holy Spirit should
   be normative for all Christians. It is part of Sanctification.

 -Most believe that the first sign of this 2nd baptism is speaking in tongues.

 -Other denominations (Presbyterian, Shakers, Mormons, Methodists) had experienced tongue  speaking in the past but it was
   the Pentecostals who made it part of their doctrine.

 -Emphasis on the Work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Believers.

 -Fundamental, arminian, pre-millennial

 -Otherwise being evangelical, their doctrine is similar to ours.

Sacraments
 -Baptism: Follow the Baptist model .

 -The Lord's Supper: Usually celebrated monthly. Memorial/celebration. Open to all believers. Usually served in their seats by
   laymen.

Worship
 -Emphasis on  the manifestation of the Spiritual gifts.
 -Physical structure
     -Pulpit is in the center emphasizing the importance of the Word.
     -Usually a communion table is placed in front of the pulpit.
     -There is often an altar rail to show that there is now open access to God for all.
     -A baptistry is usually  placed behind the pulpit.

 -Worship service is informal and non-liturgical

 -No vestments are worn by clergy.

 -Services may have a theme
     -Sunday am service is oriented around worship
     -Sunday pm service is geared for evangelism.
     -Misweek service is Bible study and prayer.

 -Order of service may include the following to some degree
     -Traditional hymns and contemporary choruses using a variety of instruments.
     -Choir and special music.
     -Public prayer
     -Offering
     -Sermon
     -Personal testimony time
     -United audible prayer and worship
     -time of manifestation of spiritual gifts; tongues, healing, prophecy,  interpretation.
