Life

I think about life,
and realize it's limited by physical being.

I think about my universe,
and realize I'm limited by time and space.

I think about my consciousness,
and realize I'm only briefly traveling through.

About me:

I'd probably like to say I'm a "brain scientist" or even a "rocket scientist" just because it has a nice "ring" to it. But I'm not; I'm a Neuroimaging Engineer. What is a Neuroimaging Engineer, you ask? I work at a university providing technical support for a group of people who actually are brain scientists.

It may sound interesting, but it uses very little of my best talent: idle observation - contemplative thought while doing virtually nothing, as opposed to actually doing things.

Since beginning this job, I've studied precessing hydrogen proton spins, k-space transforms, and magnetic resonance imaging physics. But, really, the thing I'm interested most in learning about, is just nothing; sometimes greatness... but mostly Nothingness.

The job involves a great deal of work with computers, which makes things exciting; I dislike them and they hate me - that's ironic because, for many years, I worked as a computer systems administrator.

There is no reality in the absence of observation.- The Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Although the picture above is typical of work, and of the quantum world in general (strange things happen when we're not looking), here's an even better one of me away from the office.

Personal Stuff:

Things that are meaningful...

Living simply
Dying slowly
Simple machines
Greatness
Complex organisms
Polymorphic universes
Nothingness
mostly Nothingness
Hobbies...
Motorcycle travel, my philosophy of

A recent spring motorcycle trip to The Grand Canyon of the South

An autumn motorcycle trip to The Blue Ridge Parkway

Unseen Forces - photo from a Canadian road trip, and a poem so brief it's almost painless

Love Poems - differences between the sexes

Is it Art? - unusual things precisely as found namelessly arranged by an artist uncelebrated; photos and titles by me, only, in humble pursuit of posterity

Short Stories...
Observations From a Small Motorcycle - The Illusion of Life - thoughts during a trip on a small cycle, long and metaphysical, about fifteen thousand words

The House Without A Name - short and sad, only about fifteen hundred words

As Time Approaches Zero - a bit longer and sad, a definition of life and death, about three thousand words

Miscellaneous...
My favorite Zen story - but who cares!

new The Alaska Bike Run - my latest travel adventure
