Team Dues
Posted December 15, 2008

Team Dues have been finalized for the 2009 season.

The 2009 Dues has two components: Base dues & Coaches fees. Base dues include School District fees, Field costs, uniform costs, medical supplies, administrative & management costs and Team costs, such as bus transportation for games (Varsity & JV), goalie equipment, balls, nets, equipment maintenance and miscellaneous game and practice equipment. Both Varsity & JV Players also have additional fees, which will be about $35 for JV League Fees& $75 for Varsity League fees (game Referees & League cost, since the League is charging more for their services). NEW players also have the additional cost of $20 for Team-owned practice jerseys.

One of the largest single costs is your Coaches' stipends. We have never paid our Coaches close to the School District scale for School Team Coaches. In fact, the stipend we have paid our Coaches in the past has always been about half the District scale. Several factors are impacting the stipend scales for 2009. Prominently, there is an extreme shortage of qualified, experienced Coaches State-wide. Several programs are completely without Coaches and are aggressively drafting Coaches with coaching & field experience. Other programs have people coaching their teams who have limited experience playing or coaching the game. As a consequence our Coaches are hot market items and if we plan to maintain and improve the quality of our Lacrosse teams we must compensate competitively. The Southridge Boys Lacrosse Team has played for the last nine seasons and has won the Division Championship four times. This is not luck; this is the product of quality, conscientious, dedicated coaching by qualified, experienced and dedicated Coaches. Our goal is to eventually pay our Coaches at District scale and over the next few years their stipends will increase.

The approximate Team Dues for 2009 will be as follows:

Varsity: $530 ($150 base dues+ $305 Coach Fee + $75 Additional League Fee);

JV (previous year players): $490 ($150 base dues+ $305 Coach Fee + $35 Additional League Fee);

ALL New Players: $510 ($150 base dues+ $305 Coach Fee + $35 Additional League Fee + $20 for practice jersey);

• Any New Player who makes the Varsity Squad will pay Varsity Dues plus $20 practice jersey fee..

The 2009 Season - What to Expect
Posted October 20, 2008

The upcoming 2009 season will present some challenges and opportunities for our future Southridge Lacrosse Teams.

Your Coaches met recently and spent considerable time evaluating the 2009 Season, including current overall Team and individual skills, practice formats and content, and Team game presence. With this in mind, we set some guidelines for the 2009 Season, including where and what we want our Team to be next year, Team goals and individual Player expectations, and practice focus and discipline. You can expect to see our Team step it up in 2009, so prepare yourself, physically and mentally, for exciting improvements.

Additionally, we expect an increase in the number of students who will want to join our Teams including players from the Youth Lacrosse programs who have expressed solid interest in "trying out" for the 2009 Teams.

With Team goals and expectations set at a much higher level for 2009 and the influx of potentially talented players, coupled with the finite resources we have available, principally the limited number of experienced Coaches and minimal available or useable field space, we may find ourselves in the uncomfortable, unfortunate, but predictable situation of having to make positions on the Southridge Lacrosse Teams competitive, certainly for Varsity and possibly for JV. In other words we will be looking at "tryout and cut" Teams for the 2009 Season.

Our goal for 2009 is to present a program that will include 3 Teams: Varsity, JV & JV2. The critical factor governing the number of Teams is the number of available, qualified and dedicated Coaches. We can manage the Varsity Team with 3 Coaches: Coaches Campbell, Voas and Weselak; 4 would be ideal. Each JV Team requires at least 2 full-time Coaches and at this time we have 2 Coaches who can dedicate 5 days a week to the JV Team: Coach Huber & Coach Hodgson. If this does not change then there will not be a JV2 team in 2009.

NO Seniors will be allowed to play on the JV Team. The JV Team is the "farm" team for Varsity and the level of play and the intensity of the Coaching at the JV level makes the JV Team a 'competitive' team. Coaches have recognized that Seniors on a JV Team do not benefit the program's developmental goals and they occupy valuable grooming positions on the Team which supplies future Varsity needs. In short, if a Senior player tries out for the Team he is trying out for the VARSITY team and if the does not make the Varsity team he will be cut. This is no different from OSAA School sports and the rationale is similar.

Remember that there are only so many players we can have on each team. To be effective as Coaches, for you to get the attention you need to develop, for those on the Team to get the playing time they want and deserve, and for our program to improve its competitive edge, the Coaching Staff maintains that about 20 Players per Team at practices is an ideal number. With 3 Teams that means our program would function best with 60 players total. We are planning to use the Practice-Game system we utilized in 2008 for the 2009 season. We will swing some players up from JV for certain Varsity games.

What this means to you as a current Southridge Lacrosse Player is that the field will be much more competitive in 2009 and a position on ANY Team may boil down to "the better Player". Does this mean that we may be missing potentially exceptional Players? Does this mean that there are some who will NOT have the opportunity to play? It may, depending on the numbers we get, the numbers we believe we can manage, and the quality of the Players who sign up to play.

The recommendations we make regarding pre-season skills development and physical conditioning are a measure of several things: where we are going as a Team, where we think you are, and what you can do to improve your chances of maintaining or advancing your position on the Teams. Taken seriously, you will be competitive if you dedicate yourself to improve, use these recommendations to guide your progress, and follow-through. If you ignore any one of these components, you may find yourself not only on the sidelines, but not on the Team.

We strongly suggest you consider attending one of the many Summer Lacrosse Skills Camps. Attending a local camp is better than not attending a camp at all, but some of the higher caliber camps are held out-of-state, back East and in California. Also, you should become involved in a Summer Lacrosse league. Finally, box (indoor) lacrosse begins in September and we encourage you to participate to develop your "quick stick" skills. Overall, you should IMPROVE your conditioning throughout the next few months. "Box" lacrosse is NOT a substitute for sustained aerobic and strenuous anaerobic conditioning. Weight training, sustained sprint training, and flexibility and agility training, coupled with consistent stick and ball handling practice and improvment are the goals you should set for yourself. You may also consider playing another sport in the off-season, but carry your Lacrosse stick to and from that sport's practices and games.

The bottom line is this: if the next time you pick up your Lacrosse stick to practice is the week before the 2009 Practice begins, you may NOT make the Team, ANY Team. If the next time you do any running, strength conditioning, and speed and agility work is during 2009 pre-practice conditioning week, you may NOT make the Team, ANY Team. Finally, if your skills do not improve between now and the 2009 Practice Season, you may NOT make the Team, ANY Team. We will be looking for the better Players next year to represent our Program at all levels. Do NOT wait until 2009 to get better. Now is the time!

We will hit the ground running at the start of the 2009 season so you will need to be ready: physically (in shape & well-skilled), mentally (know the system & know the game) and spiritually (highly motivated & energetic). If you just want the T-shirt you will not make the cut.

Team Tryouts
Posted October 20, 2008
This may seem early to get ready for the 2009 Season, but all players have to earn their places on the Teams, so now is the time to work and get into shape. Coaches have very high expectations of Player abilities at the beginning of practice and even if you have been with the Team for several years you will be removed from the rosters if your skill level is not at least at the minimum levelsdescribed below.

Click on Coaches Notebook to see all the requirements for Varsity & JV for 2009. ALL prospective Varsity and JV-1 players must meet the minimum standards described in Tryout Wall Drills, to make those Teams. If you do not meet these standards during the first week of practice you may be removed from the Teams Roster.

At this time we are planning to carry a JV-2 Team. Qualified Coaches are at a premium and if we do not hav sufficient Coaching Staff there will be no JV-2 Team. If there is a JV-2 Team. members will also be chosen based upon their ability. If you are a new player and have never picked up a lacrosse stick you will need to get some wall time and player-on-player time prior to the practice season if you want to make the JV-2 Team. Even though JV-2 is designed for newer and less-skilled players, we will put the best of those on the JV-2 Roster.

A good way to meet tryout standards is to follow the plan in Wall Drills and do this MORE than just on the weekends. To get good at this and meet the Tryout standards your Coaches suggest that you practice Wall Drills at least 4 times a week from now until practice begins: once each day on weekends and twice during the week.

Additionally, you must begin your physical conditioning routine outlined in the Pre-season Conditioning Program. Substitute the wall drills during the week, in that program, for the ones in Wall Drills.

This may seem like a lot and it is, but for every day and week that you do not do this, someone will be doing it and they will get your place on the Team.

Remember that your Coaches evaluate your performance and chose players for certain Teams and positions on those Teams based on:
• Overall contribution to the Team objectives (cohesion, spirit, organization);
• Mental dimensions (character, discipline, leadership, work ethic);
• Physical dimensions (endurance, strength, and speed);
• Technical competence (skills);
• Tactical awareness (situational, plays).

However your technical competence during the first week of practice is what will keep you AT practice for your Coaches to see these other qualities.

During Tryouts you must have a Name on the Back of your Helmets. Use white athletic tape or masking tape and make the Name about 4" high. This is only temporary so use something that will remove easily.

Player Eligibility
Posted October 20, 2008
Players must be full-time Southridge High School Students or a full-time student of a private school who lives within the Southridge High School boundaries.

The OSAA eligibility for schools that offer five classes (Southridge) is that the student/player must take at least four classes and pass four classes during the trimester just prior to the season (for Southridge that's the 2nd Trimester) and during the season (for Southridge that's the 3rd Trimester). There is no OSAA GPA requirement, however The Beaverton School District grade policy is the student/player must get no F's or Incompletes in any of the classes and must maintain at least an overall GPA of 2.00. If the student/player did not maintain a 2.00 GPA or had an F or an Incomplete in any class, during the 2nd Trimester, he or she can regain eligibility after three weeks of the new trimester (the 3rd Trimester) by showing an adequate progress report. Incompletes that are not cleared after the 1st week are treated as an F. Progress Report forms are available at the School. There is no appeal for student/players who did not take at least four classes during the qualifying trimesters. Consult with your school counselor for more details on how this works.

Our Team does not allow student/players who are ineligible by OSAA and District standards to compete in games or practices. Although OSAA and District rules DO allow an ineligible student/player to participate in practices, but NOT games, your Coaching Staff is committed to the belief that education comes first and, as such, have agreed that if grades are at issue then the student/player's time would be better spent on school work and making up the grades in order to regain eligibility, than on the practice field. Therefore, any student/player who is ineligible due to grades will NOT be allowed to participate in games OR practices. Grade improvements to the standard will cause the player to be re-instated on the Team Roster. Failure to meet these requirements by the extended date will result in player deletion from the Team Roster for the remainder of the season.

Players must also adhere to Southridge High School rules and regulations. Southridge High School Administration or Staff may approach the Coaching Staff with a request that we suspend or dismiss a player for disciplinary reasons and our agreement with the School is that we will honor that request. Appeals for Team reinstatement must be directed to the School and reinstatement will only occur after School approval.

Dues will NOT be refunded to players cut for grades or discipline issues.

Issuing Uniforms & Numbers
Posted October 20, 2008
Teams will be selected during the practice on Friday, February 27, 2009. All Teams will be in Games or Tournaments shortly thereafter.

Jersey numbers will be assigned during the week of March 2-6, 2009 during practices, as follows:
  1: If you played in 2008 the number you had on the Team you were on is yours IF you are on the same Team in 2009;
  2: If you are on the same team and you want a new, available number on the same Team you will choose based upon who was with that Team the longest, not by class year. If there is a tie, see 3a, 3b & 3c;
  3: If you move to another Team you will choose from available numbers based upon:
    3a: Club Seniority (those with the program the longest get to choose first);
    3b: Then by Class Year;
    3c: If there is a Club Seniority tie then by who signed up first in 2009;
  4: In the event this all becomes a pain, Coach Campbell will assign numbers based on what he had for lunch and call it a day.

Lacrosse Camps & Training
Posted November 23, 2008
Pre-season conditioning will begin in January 2009 on a voluntary basis for those prospective players who want some extra conditioning work before the regular season. These sessions will probably be conducted by a trainer from "Pure Lacrosse". See the 2009 Schedule Calendar for dates & times(subject to change).

Progressive Training Systems is also offering some conditioning sessions to those who are interested in starting earlier than January 2009. See the 2009 Schedule Calendar for dates& times.

ALL Players are encouraged to attend the Providence College Lacrosse Camp "Program on the Rise", which will be held sometime during Summer 2008 in the Metropolitan area (dates to be announced).

Here are some links to some East Coast Lacrosse Camps that might be worth looking at if you are interested in pursuing Lacrosse in College:
• New England Premier Lacrosse
• West Coast Lacrosse Combine
• National Development Program
• Player's Choice Lacrosse Camps

Please contact your Coaches if you have any questions. There are many local and less expensive training programs available and some of those listed above are not designed for everyone. Click here to see a listing of local training programs.
Parent Volunteer Positions
Posted October 20, 2008
Most of what we are capable of doing during our Lacrosse season is a direct result of the involvement of Team parents. There are many tasks that are accomplished behind the scenes that make this whole thing without the assistance of dedicated Parents we would not be able to put a quality program like this on the field happen. There are LOTS of things we need to do to make this work and if we spread the tasks around, we will have a successful 2009 Season without any one person doing too much.

Click here to see what types of things you can do to help. Please take a look at the list and help us out by making a commitment to volunteer for one of these activities. Some of these positions look overwhelming, like Scorekeeper, Team Statistics or Fundraising, but with minimal training and direction we can show you how to do these things. Contact Coach Campbell if you want to volunteer for something listed or if you think of something that we should be doing.

There will be a Parent Volunteer Meeting February 2009 so we can confirm individual responsibilities and kick off the new Season.

Keep in mind that many returning Volunteers are Senior Parents and they will not be here next year to help or train new volunteers, so now is the time to get involved.
