Opened: 1883 as Oregon State Insane Asylum

Name changed: In 1907, became Oregon State Hospital

Number of patients today: 760

Number of patients at 1958 peak: 3,600

Size of campus: 48 buildings totaling 1.3 million square feet of space, including 3.1 miles
of steam and transportation tunnels on the 148-acre campus. About one-third of the
institution's space was built between 1883 and 1912.

Operating budget: $90 million annually

Cost to taxpayers: Average $11,000 per patient per month

Claim to fame: Setting for 1975 movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," starring Jack
Nicholson and based on novel by Ken Kesey
