Subject: James Hays
I am researching my Hays(Hayes) family lines. My earliest information on my GGGGrandfather James Hays was 1820 Putnam County, Georgia Census. According to the court records of the same county he was awarded custody of 3 grand children from a son Edward. The grandchildren were: James Henry, Mary Ann, & Stephen Hays. They all showed up in the 1830 & 1840 Upson County, Georgia Census. I found his will in the Sumter County, Georgia courthouse. In his will he listed the above grandchildren and 4 children Elijah J., George W., Elizabeth (married Martin Hill), Sarah (married Cargel Wallace). This will was signed Nov. 1, 1847 and was presented in court January 10, 1848. I believe he was born 177-/1775 and died between Nov. 1, 1847 and Jan. 10, 1848. I believe there were more children because my GGrandfather Sidney O. Hayes said he was the seventh son of the seventh son. He indeed was the seventh son of his father George W. Hays but I haven't that George was the seventh son. I have loads of info on George but would like to get information on his sibblings.
Thanks

Of this much I am sure: Charles Hays, Samuel Jackson Hays, and John C. Hays Came to Claiborne/Bienville Parish, Louisiana between 1818 and 1832 (probably 1820). Charles' wife is thought to be Mounring (Morning) Enochs; Samuel's is Margaret Rachel Tate; John C. Hays' is Mary Clayton. There a lot of missing pieces but it is thought Robert Hays, born Virginia, married Jane Donelson (sister to Rachel who married Andrew Jackson). Andrew Jackson Hays and Samuel Jackson Hays string out all the way to the Louisiana connection but I am unsure just how. Can you help me?

Subject: The Hays Maze
Dear Patrick,
Sure hope you can shed some light on my own personal Hays Maze. I've gotten back as far as Solomon and Nancy (Rogers) Hays before smacking into the brick wall again. Solomon was born in NC in 1803 and Nancy in 1813. (The oldest records have her born in NC, later ones say IN). They were in Giles County for the 1840 census and already had a houseful of kids, all born in TN. William F. was born about 1830, Samuel L. b. about 1832, Fell b. about 1833, Jane b. about 1835, James T. (some records show "P.") about 1837, Mary J. about 1839, Thomas L. 1841, Rebecca about 1842, Martha S. about 1846, and Frances Minerva born 1850 in time for the census.
W. F. Hays served in Company G of the 3rd Tennessee, formed in Giles County, during the civil war. Thomas married Emily Swiney, daughter of William A. Swiney and Rebecca Jane Cook of Marshall County, TN in 1866, and Minerva Hays married Emily's brother, William Allen Swiney, in Giles County in 1869. They are still in TN in 1872, but sometime after, these four and their children head to Franklin County, IL, joining Solomon and Nancy, who are thought to have gone North first.
William, Minerva, and their daughter died within hours of each other on their farm in Macedonia, Franklin County, IL July 15, 1877 of milk poisoning, leaving their five year old son, Thomas Monroe Swiney, in the care of Thomas and Emily, who raised them with their own children. Solomon died about 1877 and Nancy in 1880. Fell and Samuel don't appear in Solomon's will. Martha Hays Mitchell slugged it out in the IL courts with Thomas and Emily over the will; I never found out how it ended. I don't have a clue where Thomas' siblings were or who they married.
Thomas and Emily's children were Ezra Allen Hays, who married Ollie Irby, daughter of James D. Irby and Olive Hogan, Calvin V., Nancy R., William E., who married Letha Unknown, and Omer L., who married Ella E. Johnson. Ezra and Ollie are buried in Akin, IL, and Omer's Social Security death benefit was paid out in Marion, IL.
Not much to go on. Add to that the grim fact that I've got Cooks, Rogers, Hayses, and Swineys on the same family tree! If any bunch was ever better at skulking around in Tennessee before vanishing off the census, I sure haven't come across them -- but if I do, you can bet I'll be related to them! Dad died abruptly in 1995, and most of the history of his family died with him. I've been trying to reclaim it for his grandchildren, but it's been an uphill climb all the way. Mom's family has it's jolts and spurts as well. If you ever come across John Downs and Mary J. White in Southern Illinois, let me know.... They plopped down on the census, married, had a baby, and vanished without a trace.
Good hunting in your own research.

I have been trying to locate information regarding Rosella Hays, born Dec. 12, 1850 in Columbus, Ohio, married to William Henry Bishop, Nov. 4, 1866 in West Alexander, Washington County, PA, and died March 8, 1926, in Elizabeth, Wirt County, WVA.
She lived in Ohio County around 1860's - before she was married. I have her death certificate but the marriage certificate is lost and the only record of their marriage is a note in the town archives. They had 8 children: 4 born in Pleasent, WVA (1868, '69,84, and 86), 2 born in Elizabeth, Wirt Co, WVA, and 2 in the state of Ohio .
I am hoping to find her parents - I nothing more than her mother was a Cherokee and her father was white - oral history.
I hope you can provide some additional information.
Thank you,

Dear Mr. Hays,

We just found your web site and find it very interesting as we are researching the surname Hays.

My husband and I are both descended from George Akin Hays, born in Virginia and Massa ?, born in North Carolina, through their son Campbell. We, as well as several other people, are searching for the marriage of George and Massa in order to find her maiden name.

At the present time, we can't connect with any of the names you have listed but hope to some day as ours originated from the same area.

Patrick, just saw your name on this list and. the name Patrick Hay rang a bell, since in my FTM files one of my ancestors was a Patrick HAYS. His daughter Joanna Hays (born 1718) married Andrew Buchanan (born 1714), of Augusta County VA, That is all I have on the Hays but since your name is Patrick Hay I just wondered if you would know anything about (or are descended from) the Patrick and Joanna Hays and the Buchanan line mentioned above?

Dear Patrick,

I recently caught a glimpse of your Web Page and I'm quite impressed with your apparent enthusiasm about your ancestors. I commend you and your contrbuting relatives. It could be that I am a relative.

My Dear late Mother was a Hayes, born in Terre Haute. Her Father's generation was the first to include the "E" in the name exclusively. All earlier generations seemed to stick with "HAYS", with an occasional record of one kind or another including the "E".

In any case, I've worked for 20 years on my Hays ancestors and have literally, thousands of records in my possession. I am descended from one George Akin Hays, born VA, 1785. Although I haven't sufficient proof, I believe I know the 4 generations that preceed him. My records on this clan begin with 1740's Virginia Instruments, and follow this Hays Clan to and through Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, and farther reaching places.

Prior to George Akin Hays, ascending, were James C. C. Hays, Andrew Hays, John Hays, and on to Patrick Hays. These folks were in what is now Rockbridge Co. VA. in the 1740's. It was Orange Co. to begin with, later Augusta, then Bottetourt, and finally, Rockbridge, after the Revolution.

After George Akin Hays, proved and descending to me (not including siblings) were Alexander Hays, born Posey Co. IN 1827, John Wright Hays, same, 1849, James Elisha Hays, born 1885, White Co. IL, and finally, my Dear Mother, Arbutus Marjorie Hayes, born 17 Sept. 1909.

You would probably enjoy knowing that Alexander's brother, Campbell was the Father of the notorious, Hannibal Hays, who was really not at all as bad as history would have us believe. Actually, he contributed much support to all of his Brothers and sisters, cousins, and Mom and Dad while living, farming and breeding horses in White Co. IL.

I guess I've said enough for this introductory note. Please write if you think I might contribute favoably to your family history.

Sincerely,

Wayne T. T.
