Up Against the Fence

Permanence, as we know it, was not characteristic of the Lenape. They moved
with the seasons as dictated by food & economics. But upon their return, many found themselves
fenced out of their own "reserved" lands by the Scottish, Swedish, Dutch & English settlers.
Records from 1725 show that the Delaware took their complaints to representatives in
Philadelphia requesting the removal of dams made on the Brandywine and to halt the White's
encroachment.
Although the courts found in favor of the Delaware Indians, no action was taken on their behalf.
There is no evidence of the Native Americans receiving satisfaction.
