2010 Northern Region Meet Summaries
February 4-???, 2010
Oak Marr Rec Center/Audrey Moore Rec Center

  • Snow Forces Schedule Changes - More changes, more may be coming

Boys' prelims (swum as timed finals) will be held at Oak Marr on Friday, Feb 12 with warmups at 4 pm and the meet starting at 5:30 pm.

Northern Region girls’ diving will be held next Friday, Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale.  Warm ups begin at 9 am

  • Thursday - Girls Prelims/Timed Finals

The snow forced the prelim portion of the meet to be swum as timed finals.  While finals may be held next week, that appears unlikely at this time.  The results from prelims will likely become the final results.  The Yorktown girls placed several swimmers in the top 16 (scoring positions).  The top six in each event qualify for the State Meet.  In additon, the 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay teams obtained State Meet qualifying times. The top finishes for Yorktown were second place finishes by Kaitlin Wolla (100 fly) and the 200 Free Relay, a fifth place finish by Abigail Ortmayer (100 breast), and a seventh place finish by Stephanie Romano (500 free).

  • Monday Swim Finals - YORKTOWN SWEEPS

The first National District Meet held at the Washington-Lee Aquatic Center proved to be a successful one for all involved, particularly the Yorktown Patriots.  Yorktown won both the boys and girls District titles.  Seven new District Meet records were set.

The battle for the title on the boys side was a back and forth affair with five lead changes. W-L won eight events to one for Yorktown (Matthew Essig in the 200 IM), but the Yorktown picked 25 more top 10 finishes to 13 for the Generals.  This depth kept the meet close.  W-L won the 200 Medley Relay with Yorktown in second.  The Generals stretched their lead to 83-66 after the 200 free.  Yorktown fought back in the 200 IM to take a slim 110-109 lead,  stretched it to 147-131 after the 50 free, and maintained a 177-170 lead after dive points were added.  The 100 fly vaulted W-L back in front by 203-191, but Yorktown reclaimed the lead by 234-227 after the 100 free.  The 500 free put the Generals back in front by 261-251.  A strong second place finish in the 200 Free relay for Yorktown narrowed to the gap to 291-285.  Yorktown used four point-scorers in both the 100 back and 100 breast to two for W-L to retake the lead and build 18-point lead (378-360) going into the final event, the 400 Free Relay.  The Generals won that relay, bit it was not enough to catch the Patriots and Yorktown won by a 408-400 score.  The boys advanced 14 entries (including divers) to the Region meet and all three relays.

The Yorktown girls won nine events and placed nearly every entry in the top six to cruise to victory.  Their 660 point total more than doubled the second place score of 303 for Falls Church (Falls Church won the other three events) and nearly matched their record 679 point total from the 2008 District Meet.  Two District Meet records were set by Yorktown girls during the meet.  The event winners for Yorktown included the 200 Medley Relay (Angela Slevin, Lydia Carpenter, Amanda Didawick, Carly Hinkle), Stephanie Romano (200 free), Kaitlin Wolla (50 free and 100 fly, State Meet qualifier and All-American Consideration time in the 100 fly), Molly Merkel (100 free), the 200 Free Relay (Wolla, Ann Carpenter, Lydia Carpenter, Abigail Ortmayer), Slevin (100 back), Ortmayer (100 breast, State Meet qualifying time), and the 400 Free Relay (Wolla, Ann Carpenter, Merkel, Ortmayer).  The girls advanced 32 entries (including divers) to the Region meet and all three relays.

    New District Meet Records:

Girls 100 Fly - 56.71, Kaitlin Wolla, Yorktown (also new Team Record)
Girls 400 Free Relay - 3:44.47, Yorktown (Wolla, A Carpenter, Merkel, Ortmayer)
Girls 200 IM - 2:09.00, Laura Schwartz, Falls Church

    Boys 100 Free - 47.60, Freddy Crawford, Washington-Lee
Boys 500 Free - 4:41.84, Balazs Kiss, Edison
    Boys 100 Breast - 59.26, Jake Huston, Washington-Lee

  • Friday Swim Prelims

The swimming portion of the National District Meet commenced on Friday, January 29, at the W-L Aquatic Center.  No formal poll was taken (OK, no poll at all was taken), but the swimmers must like the pool.  Five District Meet records were broken in prelims.  No Yorktown swimmers broke records, but they had some great swims.  They set themselves up well for Finals.

For the boys, 14 of the 32 entries in individual events qualified for A finals.  Another 13 qualified for the B finals.  The stage is set for a potential battle to the end with W-L for the District title.  On the girl's side, all 32 entries in the individual swim events qualified for the A finals.  They have put themselves in a post ion to keep their perfect record in National District Meets intact.

  • Thursday Diving

The Yorktown divers started the Patriots in the right direction with their performances at the Washington-Lee Aquatic Center.  The opening night of the National District started with boys diving.  Angus Moloney finished third and Carson Barry placed fifth.  This qualifies both for the Region meet.  Their combined 30 points put the Patriots in third place in the team standings.  Mount Vernon is first with 41 points, followed closely by W-L with 39 points.

The girls diving followed and Yorktown had three divers participate and score.  Mason Nassetta took third place and Amanda Didawick was fifth.  Both qualified to dive in the Region meet.  Gennie Gilson placed tenth and added seven points to the Yorktown team total of 37 points.  This places Yorktown second in the team standings with Hayfield in first with 39 points.  W-L sits in third with 30 points.
