At the 2008 Virginia AAA State Swim & Dive Championships, the Yorktown girls finished in seventh place with 106 points and the boys team finished in 28th with 17 points. Maren Taylor won the girls diving for the second straight year and broke her own team record (set last week at the Region meet). Abigail Ortmayer finished third in the 100 breaststroke and lowered her team record set last year. The boys were led by Tom Wells with a fourth place finish in diving.

Swim Prelims - Success at the District meet enabled Yorktown to take a large contingent to the Northern Region meet. The Northern Region is the toughest in the State when it comes to swimming and several Patriot swimmers and relays qualified for finals by finishing in the top 16 at prelims. For the girls, all three relays advanced and seven individual entries (an eighth individual entry, Angela Slevin in the 100 back, was unable to swim in finals due to illness). For the boys, the 200 Free relay advanced and AJ Dunn qualified for finals in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. |
Diving - Yorktown continued to demonstrate that diving is an integral part of the Swim & Dive Championships by getting their teams off to great starts with their excellent performances. Three girls divers finished in the top 16 with junior Maren Taylor leading the way with her third straight Northern Region title. Maren broke her own team record with a 439.55 total. Senior Meg Alderman finished 11th and freshman Cameron Hancock placed 15th to start the girls team out with 28 points before the swimming events. The boys also got off to a good start with two divers placing in the top 16. A 5th place finish for senior Tom Wells and a 14th place for junior Brian Coonce provided 17 points for the boys team.
All these divers (along with Jake Ward) qualify for the State Meet next weekend.

Saturday Finals - The Yorktown girls used speed and depth to win all of the swimming events and score a total of 679 points to remain undefeated in National District Championship meets (11th title in 11 tries). The 679 points is believed to be the highest point total ever amassed in a National District meet. The girls won all three relays and placed all of their individual entries (34 total in dive and swim events) in the top 8. They swept three events by taking first through fourth places (200 Free, 50 Free, and 500 Free).
As expected, the boys title was not settled until the final event. The Edison boys had the edge going into Finals and set four new District Meet records along the way. However, the Yorktown boys gained ground all night long and made it a race to the finish. Their valiant efforts fell just short, though, as Edison hung on for a 368 to 362 victory.

Friday Swim Prelims - The Yorktown swimmers invaded Providence Rec Center and had much success as they attempted to position themselves to defend their District titles. The boys advanced with 11 entries in Championship finals and 13 entries in the Consolation finals. The Las Vegas odds makers have this one as a battle to the finish. Every point will count in the race for the title. It could come down to the final relay like last year. The girls would not be outdone and took no prisoners as they advanced all 32 entries in the swimming events into the Championship finals. |
Thursday Diving - The divers launched the District title defenses with excellent performances Thursday night at Providence Rec Center. Jake Ward finished in 2nd with 339.5 points and Brian Coonce finished right behind in 3rd with 330.95 points. On the girls side, Meg Alderman and Cameron Hancock finished in 2nd and 3rd places with 405.80 and 332.40 points, respectively. Jake, Brian, Meg, and Cameron, along with Tom Wells and Maren Taylor, have qualified to compete in the Northern Region meet next week. |
