At this point it's too hard to call a Suns show the best I've seen....but when tapes come out of last's night's show I'd put them up against any that I've heard. This is plain and simply a very solid show. Mike Greenfield made his third appearance on drums...and man does had add a different element to the band. He is such a powerful drummer, keeping much more than a steady beat the whole show. He adds things here and there and many times forces the rest of the band to kick it up a notch. Bruce lost his voice so I wasn't expecting much from him vocally. But midway through the second set he just couldn't stand not singing and made a nice effort on Dylan's Subt. Blues. It really doesn't get much better than the first set...full of solid originals and everything played like they were making this an official live release. Wouldn't that be cool! And of course I can't forget probably one of the coolest parts of the night....Gus busting out Phish's Waiting In The Velvet Sea. Shortly after Mark nailed a Get Up Stand Up, Gus started into the intro of Velvet Sea. The rest of the band glanced at a paper with the chords and very tentatively made it through the first half of the song with Gus adding perfect lyrics. Then the jam came and Mark just took over like he had played the song hundreds of times. The best way to sum up the feeling during the song was Corrin who we all know usually shakes her bones all night. After the song she leans over and says to me, "I just froze up during that song...I couldn't move." She was just so taken by what went down....and it had nothing to do with it being a Phish song because she asked me whose song it was. It was just a very special moment whether you like Phish or not! It's all about taking chances and these guys have done that since day one! Side notes: A Live One played over the PA system before and in between sets (how often do you get to here Phish in a bar?); really nice crowd out that were into the music; the whole band seemed to already be playing above the energy level that we ended last year with; Gus stood up and played during the first song!!!!; and it was nice to have 9 members of the Dankaster crew there including Bob, Pattie and Jonathon.
