Some thoughts from last night

Just to add a few tidbits about this show. It was a much bigger crowd than last time, with probably 50-60 people in the joint. The opening band, Dyer Weed had some really groovy tunes that prepped us for the Suns.

When they hit the stage I was surprised by how good the vocals were coming through. Crystal clear. Especially during the Mark/Gus, Mark/Bruce, Gus/ Bruce, and Mark/Gus/Bruce harmonies.

The first set highlight was a cookin' Tabla that got everyone out onto the dance floor (after doing the 4 table shuffle) and got everyone boogeying. The Tabla->Marlene segue was awesome and the crowd responded well by picking up the pace. The Marlene->Charlie segue was something else. Very unexpected and sent chills down the 'ol spine. If everyone wasn't shaking their bones before, they sure were after this. Unfortunately, it ended the first set, and I thought It may have ended the groove too but damn was I wrong.

The second set opened with Get Up, Stand Up blasting off into an up tempo spacey type jam which morphed its way into a sort of jazzy groove before heading back into the Marley masterpiece. Next Time you see Me was a birthday request (not by me) after which everyone must have been in the mood and started shouting out Dead tunes. Mark responded very nicely by saying he was going to do some Juggling songs. Tolltaker was up next and built up the energy for what would turn out to be one of the best half-sets I've ever seen. When Everyone Knows was sung beautifully by Bruce and went off into another jam and then BANG....Festival. The seque into Festival was absolutely flawless and you could just feel the excitement and anticipation for Stonehenge ringing through the room. After festival, Mark gave the "We'll play one or two more you for you" routine, but with these guys one or two usually truns into three or four as it certainly would in this case. Wading in the Velvet Sea was great because everyone was so attentive by this point and you really couldn't help but feel a little moved by Gus' singing. I guess after this, Mark felt inclined to honor the requests of all those calling for Dead tunes because Shakedown Street was up next. It was packed with energy and it had everyone in the place groovin'. Shakedown went into a real deep space groove out of which Tomorrow Never Knows emerged which I thought was going to be the closer. But I was surprised once again by these guys and a smoking All Here Together flew out before I had a chance to get back to earth. It was perfect and was just finishing when they threw on the house lights bringing a fitting close to a great night of music.

Now its time to start gearing up for Stonehenge and the incredible times it will hold!!!!

Peace Y'all
Ian
