September 23, 2002 Interfacing with Measurement Computing I/O Driver Configuration and Addressing for Devices using the Universal Library

Driver Configuration and Addressing for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP Versions
To set up your I/O devices or boards to work properly with LABTECH software, follow this basic procedure.
Special Note:
If you have installed Instacal from the CD that came with your hardware before you installed LABTECH you should uninstall and reinstall Instacal since LABTECH installs its own default instacal which may conflict with the one on the Instacal CD.
Step 1 - Selecting Measurement Computing during LABTECH software installation
During the installation of your LABTECH software from the LABTECH installation disks, the installation prompts you to choose your hardware vendor and to select the level of installation: Typical, Compact, or Custom Installation.
Typical Installation : Choose Typical if you are installing a LABTECH system for the first time.
Compact Installation: Choose Compact if you want to conserve disk space.
Custom Installation: Choose Custom if you have already installed this version of LABTECH software and now wish to add hardware support (drivers) for additional vendors.
Selecting hardware vendors - The installation program displays a list of hardware vendors for you to choose from. A vendor is selected by clicking to the left of the vendor's name. A check appears to show the vendor is selected. For example:
X Measurement Computing
Select only one vendor during each installation. To select more than one vendor, repeat the installation as a Custom installation and select only the Drivers component.
Step 2 – Configuration of the Measurement Computing Driver Using Instacal
At the end of the LABTECH installation, Select Programs from the Windows Start menu. Select Hardware Guide from the LABTECH group and read the Hardware Interface Guide Help file . This guide describes any special procedures that should be performed now or immediately after you physically install the data acquisition device.
You should receive an Instacal CD with your Measurement Computing I/0. Instacal should be installed from this CD after LABTECH has been installed. This installation will install the Instacal driver configuration and I/O test utility as well as the Universal Library which LABTECH uses to interface with this I/O family.
Turn off the computer and install your Measurement Computing data acquisition device according to the manufacturer's directions. Restart your PC.
All devices which use the Universal Library are configured using Instacal. Instacal can be run by going to the Measurement Computing Start Menu and clicking on Instacal.
Some devices which are not plug and play such as ISA cards and parallel port devices must be added to Instacal using the "add board" button. Other devices such as PCI and PC-Cards which are plug and play should be recognized by Instacal when it is Launched. Whether you have had to add the device or Instacal has recognized it you will find that each device is given a Bd# X. Make note of the Bd# displayed in the Instacal for each device which you would like to install for use by LABTECH. These addresses are used in Step 3, below.
Board Configuration in Instacal:
Each device has it's own configuration dialog in Instacal. The dialog for the CIO-DAS08 is shown below:
For each device the addressing and I/O modes should be inspected to make sure that they match your hardware settings and application. Board configuration dialogs for a PCIM-DAS1602/16 and CIO-EXP16 attached to it are shown below:
Many device functions can be tested and calibrated from Instacal to verify correct hardware operation prior to device installation in LABTECH.
Step 3 - Device or Board Setup in LABTECH Hardware Installation
Select Programs from the Windows Start menu. Select Hardware Installation from the LABTECH Start Menu or select Install Hardware from the Build-Time menu:
Select your particular Measurement Computing device or board from the listed devices. Scroll down the list to make sure you are selecting the proper device or board. Click Add to add the board to the LABTECH installed devices.
Depending on the device, the Hardware Installation will prompt you for specific hardware information. For devices using the Universal Library the information that will be asked for is the board number from Instacal. This number is the address obtained from the Instacal dialog shown in Step 2.
Once the device has been added with the correct board number and I/O mode combination the device will be able to be accessed by block types appropriate to the channel types on the device.
Removing Devices
Use Install Hardware to remove support for particular devices or boards. Simply select the device from the list of installed devices and choose Remove.
