About the Somerville Fire Department
Located just to the north of Boston, the City of Somerville Fire Department protects an area of 4 square miles with a population of approximately 80,000 people. Somerville is one of the most densely populated cities in the United States. The fully paid force of 156 firefighters operates 6 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, 1 tower ladder an air supply unit and a regional Haz-Mat command post out of 5 stations. Each piece of apparatus is BLS/SAED equipped and respond to all medical emergencies in the city. Working a 24 hour tour of duty ( 24 on - 72 off ) a typical shift includes a deputy chief, an aide to the deputy chief, a district chief, 9 company officers and a minimum of 18 firefighters. The Department recorded its busiest year in history during 1998, responding to 10,370 incidents, approximately 40% of which were medical.
