This list is not exhaustive. Information may not be current. Always read a market's complete, current guidelines before submitting. (This list is intended as a quick-reference for folks who've researched the markets, not as a substitute for research.) Look at a copy of the publication if at all possible. Never assume e-mail submissions, previously published work, simultaneous submissions or multiple submissions are okay unless the guidelines specifically say so. Do use correct manuscript format. When submitting via e-mail, be sure to use the format specified in that market's guidelines.

Except in the cases of a flat fee or a percentage, payment rates are listed as cents/word. That means a market paying a penny a word pays 1/word, and a market paying a quarter-cent per word pays .25/word. Therefore, .25/word does not equal 25 cents per word.

I do not list markets that don't pay their contributors in cash. This means that many excellent markets do not appear on this list. Scavenger's Newsletter is deeply mourned.

How to Use This List: Use it any way you want! :) The way I like to use this list is to right click, select all, and save it to a word processing document. Then I delete the markets I know I'm not interested in, sort markets by whatever criteria I want, add my own notes in different colors, and add updates to markets I'm especially interested in. In other words, every author can make it their own.

    ANTHOLOGIES

This list includes some open-call erotica anthos. Why? Because (1) some SF/F/H authors also write erotica and (2) some erotica markets are open to SF/F/H stories with sexual content. These listings are here to give you an idea of what's available; however, if you are interested in erotica markets, do yourself (and the editors) a favor and visit the Erotica Readers Association
market list for complete, up-to-date information.

Butcher Block Quartet 2 -- DEADLINE: OCTOBER 31, 2007, OR WHEN FILLED.
    Snail-mail:
    E-mail: butcher_shop_quartet[ AT ]yahoo.com
    Website: http://cuttingblock.net/
Latest issue: #1 appeared May 2006.
Needs: DF/H novellas. "We want dark fiction that moves through big, exotic places. Supernatural, psychological, dark satire all could work for us, and other genres, such as the fantastic and sci-fi can serve as a backdrop. We have purchased two novellas which take place in historical times. We'll take subtle horror, but it needs to disturb deep down. The focus will be on emotive, character driven, plot-focused stories, but big, extravagant settings are vital. The thing that should separate the stories picked from the rest will be intense emotion and loss. We want stories that feel like epics. We want everyday characters to face extraordinary circumstances and insurmountable odds. We want to put a reader in the character's mind to fear what will come on the next page. And when it arrives, to feel the loss he/she endures more so than that which causes it. If emotion resonates, your novella has a chance. This is cliché, but the real horror comes from within. "
Other: E-subs only, as doc or rtf attachment; see website for detailed formatting guidelines. Read most of last year for this without finding a single submission that met needs.
Fiction: 15000 - 40000 words, pays 1.5/word (professional rates may be negotiated with "name" authors).

Cat Scratch Books -- DEADLINE: JULY 31, 2007.
Snail-mail: Attn: Anthology Editor, CatScratch Books, 5312 Dillon Circle, Haltom City, TX 76137.
    E-mail: submissions[ AT ]catscuriouspress.com
    Website: http://www.catscuriouspress.com/guidelines.aspx
Needs: H/DF -- erotic gothic horror/romance. Avoid gratuitous gore, overly explicit sex, etc. "We are seeking new, unpublished works of speculative fiction that fit into a loosely defined genre of Erotic Gothic (Horror) Romance. We would like these stories to have elements similar to the classic Gothic Romances of the 1960s (see http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/ent/A0821379.html) but also to incorporate more modern speculative fiction and horror elements as well as more erotic content. (Notice we said 'erotic' NOT 'erotica'). The following ratio would be acceptable: 60% 'Gothic'/speculative : 20% erotic : 20% romance. We are looking for stories that have a Gothic Romance Theme... i.e., young woman/bride/governess goes to work/live at a large mansion/country house/castle where there is a Deep Dark Secret that must be kept from her and everyone else, usually there is a staff at the house who are at least peculiar and un-trusting of strangers, and who are fiercely loyal to their 'master' who is usually a dark and brooding man, with a shadowy/mysterious past and is captivated by the young woman/bride/governess but won't allow his feelings to show. Something horrid and scandalous happens, the woman is usually put in danger (someone tries to kill her, or the man, or both, etc) and in the end, we usually see that her feelings for the man and his for her have crystallized. Usually love prevails and the evil cloud is dispelled, though we are not necessarily looking for a happy ending. We are not necessarily looking for a gothic 'Romance' either, instead, a spec-fic work that evokes the same feeling. "
Other: E-subs preferred, as RTF attachment. Will publish seven stories.
Fiction: 7500 - 17500 words, pays $250 ($300 for "cover story," which will also name the anthology).

"Imagine the potential of a world without God - a world where EVERYONE knows there's no God, no salvation, no retribution, no blame and, more importantly, no politically-motivated creed to protect. No moral agenda to suppress the masses. What would such a world without Gods (a Chimera World) be like?"
Other: E-subs only, as doc or rtf attachment.
Fiction: 2000-4000 words, pays 50% of profits.

Needs: SF/F/H/slipstream. H should generally be supernatural. Wants "stories that sidestep expectations in beautiful and unsettling ways, that surprise with their settings and startle with the ways they cross genre boundaries, that aren't afraid to experiment with storytelling techniques. But experimentation is not a requirement: the stories in the anthology must be more than gimmicks, and should appeal to genuine emotions, suspense, fear, sorrow, delight, wonder."
Other: E-subs only, as RTF file. To be published by Norilana Books spring 2008.
    Fiction: to 10000 words, 2/word.

Needs: H/DF/SF-H involving "New Bedlam." "The theme of the anthology is 'Insomniac imaginations bring horror to life.' No, not like 'Frankenstein's Monster,' more like the nightmares of your childhood. All stories must take place in the small town of 'New Bedlam', and follow the general gist of the flash piece "Entering New Bedlam". A basic map of 'New Bedlam' is included in the userpic-image files, with a translation of images below." (SEE WEBSITE FOR DESCRIPTION OF NEW BEDLAM.) Third-person preferred; no second-person.

Cross-Genre Cthulhu -- DEADLINE: AUGUST 15, 2007, OR UNTIL FILLED.
    Snail-mail: John Sunseri.
    E-mail: mythos[ AT ]permutedpress.com
    Website: http://www.permutedpress.com/cthulhu.php
Needs: H/DF/SF involving Lovecraft's Mythos. "Cross-Genre Cthulhu will be an anthology taking Lovecraft's Mythos--the tomes, the cults, the creatures, the gods--and blending it with other well-defined genres. We want to take the musty hermetic world of HPL and drag it out into the sunlight of Dodge City, the mean streets of Los Angeles, the bright, shiny cyberfuture of Mars Base One. Love superhero stories? Then pit your Captain Laser against the Mi-go in a battle to the death! A fan of romance? Have your heroine fall in love with a shoggoth! Tired of mercenaries going up against the Mafia? Give them a bigger opponent and have them try to stop Cthulhu from destroying Miami Beach! We're looking for fun, fast pulpy tales with an HPL flavor. We DON'T want straight pastiche--we've seen enough stories in which the bookish protagonist finds a blasphemous tome, calls up some shambling monstrosity from beyond space and time, and gets eaten. By all means keep the shambling monstrosity--we love shambling monstrosities--but have a hardboiled Sam Spade type tracking it down. Have your Tombstone sheriff trying to protect his town from the Children of Yig. Throw your Space Marines up against the Fungi from Yuggoth in a skirmish in the asteroid belt. Have the Hounds of Tindalos hunting someone through the magical land of Faery. Show us what a self-help book would look like as written by Abdul Alhazred--pick whatever genre you want and mix in a generous helping of Lovecraft's Mythos."
Other: E-subs only, as DOC or RTF file; see website for detailed guidelines. To be published by Permuted Press.
    Fiction: 3000 - 8000 words, pays $25 ($15 for reprints).

    E-mail: simian_publishing[ AT ]yahoo.com
    Website: http://www.simianpublishing.com/guidelines.html
Needs: All genres. "The vilest deeds are the ones that forever live in infamy. More than two thousand years later, we're still telling stories of Brutus stabbing Caesar. Why are these deeds remembered? Dastardly Deeds is a horror anthology that will explore the nature of the hideous. Why is vengeance so tempting? Why is murder in the hearts of so many? There are plenty of places to read about heros. This anthology is for the bad guys. Stories can be from any genre as long as they have some sort of dastardly deed as the main focus of the plot."

Hardboiled Horror -- DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 15, 2007 OR WHEN FILLED.
    Snail-mail: James Van Pelt.
    E-mail: hardboiledhorror[ AT ]aol.com
    Website: http://www.notoriouspress.com/
Needs: H/mystery blends (not just noir). Tone may be "very dark & violent to light & breezy." "It is probably not enough if the protagonist just stumbles into a situation and discovers that it is supernatural. That realization should come as a RESULT of specific detection - not accidental encounter. Stories can also start as Horror, then add the classic “detection” elements - developing theories, following clues, etc. Protagonists can be mortal or not, as long as you are blending the styles. You may even submit tales that initially seem like they are destined to have a supernatural conclusion, but which are resolved in earthbound ways, debunking the supernatural. Stories may certainly lean more heavily on one side or the other, but should include both genres."
Other: E-subs strongly preferred, as DOC or RTF file; see website for detailed formatting guidelines, including paragraph or two about background of creative process behind story. Edited by James Van Pelt. To be published as POD trade paperback early 2008.
Fiction: 3000 - 8000 words, pays approx $50 depending on story length.

The interaction of the mystic and the technological in a fantasy world is what we are looking for, a world alive with rational magicks and impossible machines. Please note that time travel stories that bring even Victorian-era machines into a pre-industrial setting are not fantasy; they are science fiction stories set in a fantasy world (for without the time travel element - a purely science-driven one - there could be no story). Description: "Odyssey is the only program of its kind run by an editor. I [Jeanne Cavelos] was a senior editor at Bantam Doubleday Dell, where I won the World Fantasy Award for my editing, and I serve as primary instructor at the workshop. Half of our class time is spent on lectures, writing exercises, and discussions. In my lectures, I provide an advanced, comprehensive curriculum, covering the elements of fiction writing in depth. To improve your writing, you need to understand the various tools and techniques writers can use to create a strong story. Many workshops, unfortunately, offer only brief, superficial lectures. We study some of the most beautiful and powerful writing in the field to gain understanding of what these tools can do in the right hands. I also discuss the common failings of developing writers and explain how to avoid those pitfalls. The other half of our class time is spent workshopping student stories. In critiquing stories, I give the same unflinchingly honest, concrete, detailed feedback that I provided as a senior editor. . . ." Six professional writers/editors visit as one-day guest lecturers.
