Dear Woods Road Neighbors, Former Neighbors, and Friends,
The 59th annual Woods Road Neighborhood Picnic was held on September 16, 2001. The day was sunny and cool with temperatures in the low 70s. Approximately 55 people attended, 7 of whom were former residents.
The picnic was slightly subdued this year due to the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The Stars and Stripes were flying at many neighborhood homes, some at half-mast. Picnic chair Steve Gross called for a moment of silence to honor the families and friends who lost loved ones in the attacks.
After everyone had loaded their plates and eaten their fill, the annual meeting took place. Steve gave a great speech on the importance of a good neighborhood. He recalled the neighborhood he grew up in and recalled who had the best driveway for basketball and whose sister was the best looking girl on the block. Steve pointed out that even though the world around us is changing (especially since September 11), the importance of growing up in a great neighborhood will never change.
Steve then asked the former residents to identify themselves. They included Skip Ungrodt, Joanne Hertler (Durant), Armethia Sims, and Tad and Wanda Wysor.
Officers elected unanimously this year were:
Picnic Chair: Steve Gross
Secretary: Theresa Davis
Paul Schreiber proposed the following flower fund policy: send flowers or contributions to the families of residents who have died or are seriously ill, and send cards to acknowledge deaths of immediate relatives of current residents or births of babies. The proposal was passed unanimously. The meeting was then adjourned and the kid's games commenced.
Andy Gillman organized the games again this year and the kids had fun running around. Toward the end of the day, Chris Launius tried to keep a hatful of ice water on top of his head as long as possible until the pain was too much to bear. He eventually determined that ten seconds is the limit of human endurance for ice water on the head.
At the end of picnic, a small group of neighbors brainstormed ideas for the 60th picnic next year. We'll have a planning meeting early next year to discuss these and any other ideas. In the meantime, please send me any suggestions.
I'd like to thank all of the people who worked on the picnic:
The kids: Scott and Chris Launius, Kevin
Wu, Shawn Winkelseth,
The adults: Tisha Moore, Dan and Theresa
Davis, Megan McCann, Andy Gillman, Steve Wu, Steve Gross.
