DAILY COLORS

Back in the early 1970's I was working my first real office job. One day, my boss's secretary asked me if I realized that I had worn the same suit and tie for three days in a row. I hadn't noticed, of course, and realized that I had been picking my favorite suit and tie each day. To avoid repetition and spread the wear-and-tear over my entire wardrobe, I had to come up with a simple plan to alternate what I wore each day. But how could I come up with a daily color scheme that I could remember on a daily basis?

I pondered a while and finally remembered my astrological studies from my high school days. We have seven days in the week because the ancient Babylonian astrologers recognized seven visible wandering lights, the planets, in the sky which moved against the backdrop of the fixed stars. Over the centuries or millenia, each planet became associated with many things, one of which was a week day and another being a color.

I decided to start my wardrobe with a tie of the proper color each day, then pick the suit which best matched that tie. Shirt, shoes and socks follow the suit and tie combination. Not only did I have a simple rule to follow each day but I would also be in tune with the cosmic currents. The daily data is shown in the following table.

DAY PLANET COLOR OPTIONS
Sunday Sun Yellow Gold
Monday Moon White Grey, Silver
Tuesday Mars Red
Wednesday Mercury Purple Mixed Colors
Thursday Jupiter Blue
Friday Venus Green
Saturday Saturn Black

Over time, I accumulated more ties and now faced the dilemma of which red tie I should wear on a given Tuesday. I solved this by getting a tie rack with seven columns of multiple pegs. Yellow ties hang on the first column of pegs, white on the second, etc. The top tie is tie 0, the next one down is tie 1, the third one is tie 2, etc. To pick the tie for the day, I start at the column of the correct color. Then I divide the day's date by the number of ties. For example, if I have three red ties and it's Tuesday the 17th., I divide 17 by 3 and get a remainder of 2. So I'd wear the tie on the third peg of the Tuesday column.
