Babylon 5

While I'm definitely part of the television generation, I've never been a babbling fan of any show, until Babylon 5. 'Bab5' is a science fiction show unique in that J. Michael Straczynski (AKA, the Great Maker) has outlined a specific big story to be told over the course of 5 seasons, a novel told on television chapter by chapter. Nearly every episode advances that big story arc at least a little. Some episodes are centrally oriented towards the main story arc, advancing it substantially. It is unclear who the good guys and bad guys are in this show. Just when you think you have an idea what will happen next, there is likely to be a twist that leaves you breathless. Major characters die, others transform dramatically. The scale of the story is the whole Milky Way Galaxy. There are apparently angels and demons. It is thoughtful in its presentation of religions, but leaves us with some unexpected ideas about the true basis for religions. The tone of the show is an ambiguous, sometimes dark, future with beings having frailties and misdirected motivations much as we find in our world today. This tone is probably the result of Harlan Ellison's efforts as conceptual consultant for the show.
