More than 1,600 books from Northern California are now in use by Baptist seminary students and local pastors In the Philippines, thanks to the Book Project of the Pacific Coast Baptist Association.
Noting that the cost of books in the Philippines puts basic theological books beyond the reach of most village pastors and severely limits additions to the University library, PCBA created a program through which needed books no longer in use here could be sent for this purpose. Many of the books have come from retired ministers and church libraries. These include Bible commentaries and dictionaries, books on church history and doctrine, works dealing with pastoral care and Christian education, and general reference books.
Earlier this year, Dale and Alice Edmondson represented PCBA at centennial celebrations of the university which included a service of dedication of the new books added to its library as a result of PCBA's efforts. Central Philippine University was founded in 1905 by American Baptist missionaries and Is now a highly-regarded institution with more than 8,000 college students and about 3.000 students in schools of other levels.
A recent contribution is the basic library of the late Dr. Robert Hannen, for many years Professor of Systematic Theology at Berkeley Baptist Divinity School (now American Baptist Seminary of the West). Other contributions have come from the libraries of A. Stanley MacNair, Grant Hanson, Mark Liebenow, Arden Clute Dale Edmondson and Esther Hargis. Retired hymnals were given by First Chinese Baptist Church of San Francisco end Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church of Oakland.
