Traditional Music Selections for Weddings

These are all tried-and-true selections for the wedding ceremony.  Some are better known than others, but all work well.

I've had many brides ask me to include sound clips on this page.  I wish I could without violating copyright laws!  But I do have recordings on hand for the songs marked with asterisks below... if you'd like to hear them, email me and we'll make arrangements.

And here's a little trivia -- the #1 most-requested piece for weddings here in the Pittsburgh area is... Pachelbel's Canon in D (surpassing even the traditional wedding march)!

Part of the Ceremony

Suggested Selections

Preludes

Played while people are being seated. If you're having a singer, songs (listed below) are often sung here.

*Canon in D – Pachelbel
*Air on the G String – Bach
*Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring – Bach
Arioso in C – Handel
("Thanks Be to Thee")
*La Cavalliera Rusticana - Mascagni
(listen at about 1.5 minutes into the recording - you'll recognize it from TV)
*Bist du Bei Mir - Bach
*Air from "Water Music" - Handel
*Arioso - Bach

Songs

May be sung just about any time before or during the ceremony.  See also Unity Candle and Flowers below.

One Hand, One Heart (from West Side Story)
All I Ask of You (from Phantom of the Opera)
The Wedding Song “There is Love” (needs a guitarist)
Grow Old With Me (John Lennon)
The Gift of Love
The Lord’s Prayer  (Malotte)
Longer  (Dan Fogelberg)

Bridesmaids’ Processional

Played while the bridesmaids, flower girl(s), and ring bearer(s) are coming down the aisle.

Usually chosen from the Preludes listed above or from the Bride’s Processionals listed below… just be sure the bride’s music is “bigger” than the bridesmaids’ music!

Bride’s Processional

For the majestic entry of the beautiful bride!

*Bridal Chorus – Wagner (“Here Comes the Bride”)
*Trumpet Voluntary – Purcell
*Trumpet Tune – Purcell

Unity Candle/
Flowers to the Mothers

O Perfect Love (or other hymn, sung or played)
The Lord’s Prayer – Malotte (sung)
*Ave Maria - Schubert
*Ave Maria - Bach/Gounod

Passing of the Peace

Songs:
My Peace – Routledge
Let There Be Peace on Earth

Communion

Usually chosen from the individual church’s traditional communion music, or may choose from the Songs listed above.

Recessionals

Played while the bride, groom, and wedding party exit down the aisle.  If you have a large number of guests, you may want to request a second recessional be played while they exit.

*Wedding March – Mendelssohn (the traditional exit)
*Ode to Joy – Beethoven
*Rondeau – Mouret
(also known as "Masterpiece Theatre")
Wedding March #3 – Bloch
*Largo from Xerxes – Handel

Instrumental Music

(optional for Preludes, Processionals, Solos, and Recessionals)

Ashoken Farewell (Theme from Ken Burns’ Civil War)
Selections from "Water Music" - Handel
Selections from "The Four Seasons" - Vivaldi
