Summer Vacation 2004

As we have done several times, we spent a week in August on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We arrived shortly after Hurricane Charlie passed nearby (fortunately it had weakened to a tropical storm), but we had very nice weather with highs in the 80s. We stayed in a town house near the beach in Kitty Hawk.

The parking lot was flooded when we arrived, and there was still some water when we left. We spent almost every morning and evening at the beach. For the first time Mary was eager to dodge waves in the surf.

Creekside restaurant As usual, we drove south to Cape Hatteras, took the ferry to Ocracoke Island, and ate lunch at the Creekside Cafe in Ocracoke Village.

View from balcony On the way back to Kitty Hawk, we stopped to climb the 257 steps to the balcony of the recently re-positioned Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. We could see the Diamond Shoals light about 12 miles offshore.

statue of horse sunset Fiberglass statues of winged horses were scattered about town as part of Centennial Celebration of flight. These two were near the Blue Point restaurant in Duck, where we had a very nice meal.
