We spent most of the day travelling Route 504 into Mount St. Helens, stopping at overlooks along the way. It was a cloudy, overcast day and you could not see the tops of the mountains. We spent about 3 hours at Mt. St. Helens hoping for the skies to clear and they did just as we got ready to leave! The late sun gave a wonderful view. The images capture it very poorly.
This flow of volcanic ash is 100 feet deep in the floor of this valley 20 miles from the volcano. A stream is cutting its way through the ash.

Those toothpick-looking things are 100 foot tall trees flattened by the eruption in 1980 10 miles from the mountain.
