Our Trip to Alaska

June 12, 2001

I should mention that during the entire cruise the length of daylight hours was very great. Two factors combined for that circumstance: first, we were travelling virtually at the summer soltice, when the sun is as far north as it will get during the year, and our latitude on Earth keep increasing during the voyage until by the time we were at College Fjord the sun did not get far enough below the horizon for Astronomical twilight to occur. IT NEVER GOT COMPLETELY DARK!

This was Tuesday and it dawned clear and bright - an absolutely gorgeous day. No port today, just sailing the Inside Passage. I had brought a book along to read, "Passage to Juneau", in which the author relates the events surrounding his solo effort to sail a 30' yacht from Seattle to Juneau. He included much information from researching the exploration of the region by Vancouver in 1792. It was a great read for this trip.

We did encounter fog banks in the A.M. and when in them, the ships horn sounded every minute or so and could be heard for miles.

A neat arc of light from the fog.

The scenery was terrific.

Occasional towns like Bella Bella punctuated the day.

The sun deck was warm enough for sunning.

I decided the theme of the trip should be waterfalls. This is rain forest country and waterfalls were everywhere.
