Saturday morning found us entering Glacier Bay. We had to go 60 miles up into it so we were steaming the whole morning. Skies were clear and bright and the nearness of the glaciers made this the coldest day of the trip thusfar. Two park rangers boarded the ship and spent the day with exhibits and info over the loudspeakers. There was lots of wildlife though the views were not very close. Ice floes and calving were the order of the day. We spent the majority of our time near the Grand Pacific Glacier and Majorie Glacier. The Grand Pacific glacier is indeed grand but unfortunately is chock full of boulders and rocky material of all shapes and sizes that have been garnered from its icy course down the long valley. It looks DIRTY! Marjorie Glacier, on the other hand, is more like the glaciers pictured in publicity shots, clear and blue.
All of the calving we saw took place on Marjorie. We saw some beautiful events: falling and crashing, splashing from one or two hundred feet. Very cool!
