We left Glacier Bay and steamed out into the mighty Gulf of Alaska with nothing but 3000 miles of open water between us and Japan. All night and all day we steamed north and west entering Prince William Sound in the late morning. The skies were rainy, stormy or threatening. Not a pretty sight, so we stayed indoors and enjoyed the ship. We crossed the sound and worked our way up College Fjord. An earthquake several weeks before had caused a massive amount of calving and the fjord was choked with icebergs, limiting our minimum approach distance. The on-board naturalist did say that we were able to get a mile closer than the previous cruise had. Still the fjord was chock full of ice.
