Our Processing and Products

One piece of the puzzle of making the growing of ecologically complex forests economically viable is finding, or developing, quality markets for all of the logs removed from the forest – including seven species and varied diameters.  As neighboring forests and the mills they supply become increasingly simplified (focused on small diameter fir logs) this becomes an increasingly challenging.

To meet this challenge we process those logs with lowest log value and highest finished wood value into finished products, primarily the hardwoods.  While most of our logs are sold to sawmills, a small percentage of our logs, primarily the hardwoods, are processed on site into flooring, laminated counters, finished lumber, and beams.

Our preference is to sell these products as directly as possible to the end user.  We’re pleased to be active members of Northwest Sustainable Timber Growers – a cooperative of FSC certified forest owners and managers, the Healthy Forests Healthy Communities Partnership, and Portland’s Build Local Alliance – linking local, double quality wood with local projects.

So, in case you are asking yourself “how can I better connect with the forest by getting the wood I need from it?”, this is the section for you.  In recent years we’ve been pleased to see Hyla woods become part of several homes in Portland, countertops in the south Waterfront and the Armory Theatre, handcrafted furniture, and several new floors across the state.  Here is a summary of the wood that is currently available and scheduled to be available in the next 12 months:

Fir Flooring – 660 sq. feet of 3” flooring from the Manning Forest is now available.  More will be on the way in ’07.

Fir Select Lumber – All of this year’s supply has been purchased with the exception of rough 1x4, 1x6, and 2x6.  More will be available in ‘07

Cedar – Currently available in 4/4 and 7/4 various lengths and widths, kiln dried.

Oak Flooring – A small amount is currently available with more is on track for sale by late Fall

Oak Lumber – Select 4/4 lumber available

Maple Flooring and Counter – Next batch scheduled for completion by late Fall ‘06.

Maple and Oak 2” Slabs and Burl – Currently available

Firewood – With the temperatures dropping and energy prices rising, we encourage you to consider a cord of firewood.  We have a large stock on hand and ready to burn – oak, maple, fir, cedar – in super slabs or rounds – “you-pick” or delivered.  Check with us for details.

Note on Availability:  The products available are determined by what the forest’s annual growth allows for.  Your options for using Hyla Woods for your future project are increased by planning well ahead and reserving wood from the pool of what will be annually available.
