The Human Meteor began his comic book life as Duke O'Dowd of the Foreign Legion in Champion Comics no. 6. He gained superpowers in issue 8 and adopted a costume in issue 9.

While traveling to Tibet, Duke O'Dowd, an American taxi driver, was given a "wonder belt" by Wah Le, an ancient ruler. The wonder belt repels all metals, preventing harm to the wearer. The Human Meteor's powers also included super strength and speed. The hero was assisted by an orphan boy named Toby, the only other person aware of O'Dowd's double identity.

The Human Meteor, in one form or another, appeared in Champion/Champ Comics 6-25.
