Mystico, often referred
to as the Wonder Man, began his career as a mummy from an ancient civilization. In
Startling Comics no. 1, a mad scientist sought to build an army of the undead by
using his strange "vita-ray" to resurrect the dead. In order to test his ray, he
steals a mummy from a museum and begins the treatment. Unsatisfied with the slow
progress of the revitalization, the scientist increases the power of the vita-ray,
causing the device to explode.
As a result of the explosion,
the building they were in was completely destroyed, killing the scientist, but not
the revived mummy, who finds he still possesses the same magical powers he did during
his lifetime centuries ago. The mummy adopted the identity of Mystico and used his
powers to battle crime and evil in an effort to help humanity.
Mytico appeared in Startling
Comics 1-9 & 11-17, as well as the first issue of The Fighting Yank.
