TARGET LOGO

Welcome to the second volume of Pure Excitement Comics' reprint series focusing on the Target and the Targeteers.

This CD-ROM features 18 great stories which have never previously appeared in the pages of Pure Excitement Comics, as well as higher-quality versions of two additional Target stories which were featured on the web site. The 20 tales were published over a period of almost a decade (January 1941 to January 1950), and give readers a clear picture of the evolution of the feature throughout its existence.

The following is a short biography of the Target and the Targeteers which first appeared in issue 2 of Pure Excitement Comics:

The Target was Niles Reed, a metallurgist who developed a flexible and bulletproof metal material which he used to create his yellow Target costume. In his first appearance, he became the Target to help his brother, who was being framed for murder. However, his brother was killed in the story, leaving the Target wanted by the police.

From his second appearance on, the Target was assisted by two partners known as the Targeteers. They were Tom Brown and Dave Foster. Dave and Tom wore red and blue versions of the Target costume, but who wore which actually varies from story to story, probably depending on how closely the colorist was paying attention. The Target himself occasionally ends up in a miscolored costume!

The trio were often assisted by their secretary, Tina, who figures prominently in a few of the stories reprinted here.

The Target appeared in almost 100 issues of Target Comics, beginning with Vol. 1 No. 10 and running, with some gaps at the end, through Vol. 10 No. 1. The feature also appeared in three issues of 4 Most Comics and Blue Bolt Comics 102-105 & 110.

The stories in Blue Bolt may be reprints from earlier issues of Target Comics. The two reprinted here are placed in chronological order based on the publication dates of the Blue Bolt issues. The last story is taken from the unauthorized 1957 "Accepted Publications" reprint of Blue Bolt No. 103. The publication date listed in the column to the left is for the original "Star Publications" printing.
