Skagit Valley

March 24, 2003

Paul flew from Tennessee to Seattle on Saturday, March 22 and spent the night with his wife Pat, who moved to Seattle in January.  On Sunday, they rendezvoused with Dave Ogden from California, who was to be Paul's roommate for the week.  They drove up to Becky's home in Mt. Vernon, about an hour and a half north of Seattle, where Dave and Paul spent the night.  On Monday, Becky treated the guys to a nice little tour of the Skagit Valley, on the way to Anacortes to catch the ferry to Friday Harbor.  Here's a sampling of the sights we saw.  Click on these small images to get bigger ones.

Lots of Trumpeter Swans winter in the Skagit.  We were a little late in the season to see many, but we found this one flock on the ground. Likewise with Snow Geese.  We were a little more fortunate in finding them, and ran across two large flocks.
This bald eagle was very obliging about posing at the top of what was clearly His Tree. Eagles are fairly common in those parts. One of the valley's many fields of daffodils, with Mt. Baker in the background.
Bridge at Deception Pass. Mt. Baker, from the middle of the bridge.
Once we got to San Juan Island, we had time to do a bit of sight-seeing before checking in at camp.  Here are Becky and Dave in front of a huge maple tree at "English Camp," part of San Juan Island National Historical Park.
