SMGF2 traces his lineage from Utah, USA to Leicestershire to Shropshire while SMGF3 traces his lineage from Yorkshire to Leicester. The most likely point of connection between these two families would seem to be Leicestershire in the early- to mid-1700s.

Descendants of three of the four Goff brothers of western Virginia were tested and findings confirm the historical record that James Goff, John Turton Goff and Salathiel Goff were brothers. The ancestral haplotype of the father of the four Goff brothers is a 56/58 match with a descendant of Stephen Gough d. 1700 St. Mary's Co., MD. Stephen Goffe (spelling in document) was transported to America in 1664 or 1665 by William Tettershall, according to land patent records at the Maryland State Archives. The Tettershall family of St. Mary's Co., MD was from Wiltshire, England and Stephen Gough later married the widow Mary (Tettershall) Jarboe, who had a brother named William Tettershall. Descendants of the four Goff brothers are generally Protestant while descendants of Stephen Gough of St. Mary's Co., MD are generally Catholic. DYS439 may hold the key to sorting out the precise relationship between these families. Within haplogroup I1, 11 repeats is observed 75% of the time while 12 repeats are found about 18% of the time.

While Stephen Gough (d. 1700 St. Mary’s Co., MD) and the four Goff brothers of western Virginia, have matching Y-chromosomes, the precise nature of their relationship is unknown. The four Goff brothers first appeared in the known historical record in 1765/66 Loudoun Co., VA. Ignatius and Patrick Burns, Catholics from St. Mary’s Co., MD, were close neighbors of the Goffs in Loudoun Co., VA. St. Ignatius was the patron saint of the Catholic settlement in MD and there was a heavy concentration of this given name in St. Mary’s Co., MD. As such, the 1790-1820 census was analyzed for instances of this name in the states around MD to learn something about the migration paths out of St. Mary’s.

A distribution analysis of the Goff surname and similar haplotypes in England has uncovered what may be a related Goff family in 16th century Norfolk Co., England. Note that this family includes sons named Salathiel and Benjamin, which are common names among four Goff brothers and Stephen Gough descendants, respectively. There are indications that the deeper ancestry of this haplotype is in Norway/Sweden.. Haplogroup I1 is confirmed by P40+ (kit F25496 - Ethnoancestry) and M253+ (kit F88604 - FTDNA).

The Buckingham Co., VA and Bristol Co., MA Gough/Goff families match on 63 of 67 markers. However, the Buckingham Co., VA haplotype is based on only one results for 55 of the 67 markers. Once expanded test results for FN69264 are available, the genetic distance may be reduced. It is not clear if William Gough of Buckingham Co., VA descends from or shares a common lineage with the Bristol Co., MA Goff family. A comparison of given names between the two families and analysis of the neighbors of William Gough may hold clues. 

Participant F86159 traced his ancestry to Thomas Franklin Goff b. 1828 Bristol Co., NY, who can then be traced to his grandfather, Asa Goff b. 1782 in Rehoboth, Bristol Co., MA, a descendant of Anthony Goffe through his son Richard Goff. Participant DLXW8WF has a paper trail to Anthony Goffe through his son Robert Goff. Participant F50512 descends from Jonathan Goff who, according to his military records, was born in Taunton, MA, which is in Bristol Co., MA. All three men are high matches for the ancestral haplotype, although Jonathan Goff has not yet been connected to Anthony Goffe. Note that all mutations are arbitrarily assigned to kit F50512, which has been SNP-tested as M269+ by FTDNA. Until another participant with these marker tests joins the project there is no way to know which participant's lineage has which of the four mutations.

This family seems to have originated in eastern VA and spread south and west. William Gough b 1720 lived in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., VA in 1744 when his son Joshua, the ancestor of  participant # D69ZFH4, was born. Isham Goff was born in SC, but the earliest record of Isham Goff is his marriage to Sarena McBride (c1813 GA – bef 1860) on 21 January 1831 in Rhea Co., TN. William Gough and Isham Goff descendants are an exact match on all 25 markers and there is an 85% or 94% probability that the most recent common ancestor was no more than 200 or 300 years ago, respectively. Differences in DYS390 and DYS444 offer the potential to sort these participants into different branches of the overall family, the precise structure of which is unknown at the moment. Haplogroup is a prediction.

Stephen Goff was born in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT and died in Guilford Co., NC. James E. Goff was born in Hatter's Cross Roads, NC (Surry Co.?). He married Jane H. Jones 26 November 1836 in Delaware Co., IN where he died 1853. Stephen Goff and James E. Goff descendants match on all 32 overlapping markers and there is a 92% or 97% probability that the most recent common ancestor was no more than 200 or 300 years ago, respectively. The precise connection between these families is not known. Haplogroup is from a SNP test on kit F24908.

"Edmond Gough" and "Henry Gough" first appear in 1830 and "Louis Gawf" in the 1840 Henderson Co., TN census. Descendants of each of these three men have family stories that their ancestor was born a Barlow and later took the name Goff. The probability that descendants of Edmond Gawf,  Henry Goff, Lewis Goff, William Henry Barlow and "Isle of Wight, VA" Barlow share a common paternal ancestor is 97% or 99% within the last 200 years or 300 years, respectively. Haplogroup is a prediction. Note that with the possible exception of CDYa/b, all mutations from the common ancestor seem to have arisen in recent generations in each lineage. That is, there are no common mutations with which to sort the lineages. Note that the Barlow haplotypes above are from the Barlow DNA Project. 

To find a possible location for where the orphan event took place, every Goff and Barlow (and variants) in the 1790-1810 NC census returns was analyzed. William and Thomas Barlow and Sterling Gawf of 1790 Wake Co., NC are the only Barlow and Goff families living in the same county at the same time in NC. By 1800, William and Thomas Barlow were gone, leaving Sterling Gawf with a household that included two white males under the age of 10. Hugh Gawf also appears in the 1800 Wake Co., NC census. By 1810, there were no Goffs (or Barlows) in Wake Co., NC.  

F80830 has a family tradition that his father was the son of a man other than the paper trail grandfather. The father was born in 1924 in Osage Co., OK to a woman who had been married to the same man since ca. 1917. She and her husband lived in Kingman Co., KS in 1920 and Reno Co., KS in 1930. Her other children (born before and after 1924) were born in KS. There is a family story that Levander Polk Goff, who was raised by Ambrose (b. ca 1832 TN) and Mary Goff, was an orphan taken in by the Goff family. Ambrose  Goff, grandson of the above Ambrose Goff (b. 1766 VA) was single and living in Warren Co., TN in 1850 and married with Polk Goff age 6 in his household in 1860 in Cannon Co., TN. Haplogroup J1 only appears about 2.5% of the time in the ysearch database. Given the Goff orphan story, the high DNA match and the rarity of the DNA haplogroup, it seems plausible that Levander Polk Goff was born a Brock and adopted by the Goff family. Further, the Levander Goff descendant has DYS640=11. This matches the mutation that triangulation of descendant results indicates happened at the birth of Amon Brock, son of Jesse Brock. DYS640 is a very slow-mutating marker. Kit F91801 has been SNP-tested M267+ by FTDNA.

The above haplotypes do not match the ancestral haplotype of any known Goff family groups above. Further research is required.  Haplogroups in green are SNP-tested, while red are predictions. "OGAP" stands for Oxford Genetic Atlas Project. These samples were collected under terms of confidentiality. Only the surname and general geographical location are known. Two of the R1b results match match the Oxfordshire/Bristol/Buckingham Goff/Gough family, the CT/NC family and the Shropshire family. However, the ten-marker haplotype is not sufficient in haplogroup R1b to ascertain which matches are through coincidence and which are from common descent. OGAP matches in haplogroup I1 may be meaningful.

FOOTNOTES:

(1) DYS385 is conventionally reported in numerical order of the two values, with "a" low and "b" high. In Apparent Intrachromosomal Exchange on the Human Y Chromosome Explained by Population History, Kittler developed a method to determine the proper physical order of DYS, which may be important in distinguishing populations. DNA-Fingerprint tested participant 25496 and determined the physical order to be 385a(K)=14 and 385b(K)=13.  

(2) DYS464  usually has four readings (a-d), but may have up to seven readings (a-g). Readings are conventionally reported from low to high. If man #1 has readings of 17,17,18,19 for 464a-d and man #2 has readings of 16,17,17,18,19 for 464a-e, the two men have a genetic difference of one on this marker since four of the man #2's five readings match man #1's four readings. Some believe all DYS464 mutations should only be counted as one event as this marker seems prone to multiple-step mutations. Per Dennis West's 12 March 2005 post to the Genealogy-DNA Rootsweb List: "In our WEST project we have two full brothers who [who] match on all markers except 464. They are: 14,16,16,17 [and] 14,14,16,16."
