Who Are the Philly Eastenders?
We are a group of individuals in the Philadelphia, South Jersey, and
Delaware Valley area who enjoy the British drama EastEnders. Until
recently, this drama was broadcast weekly on WHYY, a Philadelphia public
television station. However, WHYY pulled the show suddenly in January,
2003. Although the show is broadcast currently on the Allentown, Pennsylvania
station WLVT, this station is not receivable in most of the Delaware Valley
area.
WHYY was the first station in the U.S. to broadcast EastEnders, and had broadcast the show continuously since 1988.
Through publicity efforts, and fundraising, we hope to convince WHYY to again
broadcast EastEnders. We currently have an open dialogue with David
Rubensohn (Program Director for WHYY) and are trying to come up with a reasonable
cost for the program. In today’s harsh economy the station is feeling
the pressure. We need to show WHYY we are committed to support EastEnders
financially once we’ve gotten it back on the air. However, we need
your help to do so. The more support we can gather, the better leverage
we will have with the station.
At present, the Philly EastEnders keep up with EastEnders through a tape share program.
