Georges Creek Sub

CSXT's George's Creek sub runs along the old Georges Creek Rail Road line, connecting to the CSX main at Westernport. This section of rail, still used for on-demand coal service, is some of the earliest track in Allegany County. The section from Westernport to Lonaconing was built in 1853 as the Georges Creek Railroad, to allow the shipment of iron from the Lonaconing Furnace.

The Georges Creek Subdivision of CSX extends northward from Westernport, Maryland, along ex-Western Maryland, ex-Cumberland & Pennsylvania track, a little more than 10 miles, nearly to Midlothian. Beyond that, Interstate-68 sits astride the right of way. In 1991, the Georges Creek subdivision of CSXT hauled 195,197 tons of coal over this line. Compare that with 225,000 tons in 1855. The CSXT designation is B880, a local freight out of Cumberland's Coal Business Unit.

The line suffered much wash out as a result of the floods of January, 1996, but CSXT maintenance of way crews rapidly reballested the line. This indicates that there might still be an economic reason for its existence. The line was again washed out in August of 1996. Westernport is the geographic end of the Georges Creek sub, but not the end of nearly 150 years of coal hauling service.
