This week the Honors Physics students will continue their study of Torque as a 2nd condition for equilibrium. As this is completed the students will then be introduced to Newton's 2nd Law as a very minor variation on the 1st Law. The students will be shown how to solve 2nd Law problems by:

  • make a free body diagram

  • determine the direction of the resulting acceleration

  • break the vectors into components parallel of perpendicular to the direction of the acceleration

  • add the forces in the direction of the acceleration and make the sum equal to mass x acceleration

  • Assign HW #37 2nd Law with Gravitation
  • Class discussion on problem solving with Universal Gravitation

  • Assign HW #38 2nd Law - Universal Gravitation
  • Introduce 2nd Law problems involving rotating systems
  • Quiz - 2nd Law with Rotation
 
The discussion of Newton's 2nd Law will focus on the application of the 2nd Law to Universal Gravitation. The Standard will be reviewed with a direct application to Universal Gravitation.
The lab procedure this week will involve the analysis of Newton's 2nd Law.

Reading assignment: Go to the web site HyperPhysics click on MECHANICS and then TORQUES & EQUILIBRIUM.

The theoretical emphasis this week will be on the calculation and application of torques at equilibrium.
