Statement
I was raised abroad due to my father's work with the US government, mostly in Germany yet also in Turkey, South Korea and the United Kingdom. My varied cultural experiences impact my work just as much as any individual artistic influence. Such strong memories driven by my upbringing create narrative situations where I explore my European and American duality. Elements and symbols from my past are interwoven with compositions that are based upon contemporary thoughts, emotions and events. Thus, each piece is a search for truth that defines a specific experience or passion, with the final act of painting leading to an often (and intentional) chaotic emotional response to my unique cultural dilemma. The human form has great impact with me, and the figure is a vital component of virtually all of my compositions. I am an abstract-inspired painter working in oil using swathes and drips of juicy color with the assistance of a mixed assembly of palette knives and brushes, adding newsprint and other written media to complete the composition . I employ a variety of layered color applications to enforce depth and create a sense of history in each piece. |
