BONUS PAGE #2

EARTH SCIENCE

Worth 10 points each - Try one or try them all!

·         FULGURITES - When lightning strikes silicate-rich mineral sand, a rare form of natural glass is formed called fulgurites. Read about it on page 22 of your textbook and research how scientists try to make lightning strike in specific locations to form fulgurites and the companies that create them. Write a one-page report or 5 slide PowerPoint about your findings.

·         EAGLE STONES (Atetites) - In the middle ages, people believed that some rocks, called eagle stones, could reproduce. Scholars professed that the rocks cracked open like eggs, and small rocks poured out. Research these allegations and the phenomena from which they came. Write a one-page report or 5 slide PowerPoint about your findings.

·         THE ROCK CYCLE -  Make a poster that illustrates the rock cycle. Cut out pictures from magazines of the different types of rock and processes in the rock cycle. EX: a picture of a marble statue could represent metamorphic rock (marble).

·         ROCK EATING BIRDS - Some birds swallow stones to help with digestion. The stones settle in a compartment called the gizzard. In writing, explain how this works. You can even present your findings to the class for extra points with a demo (See Ms. K for ideas)

·         VOLCANIC NECKS - Research Devil's Tower or Ship Rock. Tell me where they are and how they formed. Explore a story or myth about volcanic necks.

·         BLACK SMOKERS - Research these recently discovered  structures at the bottom of the Galįpagos Rift and the bizarre eco-system full of life-forms found there.

·         ROCK CITY - Between 300 B.C. and A.D. 200, the Nabataeans carved their city by hand into a mountainside. It is called Petra . Research the people and city of Petra that  was shown in the movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
