Biographical Information

I have been doing automobile restoration for over 30 years.

It all started when I was a little kid and I use to watch a guy paint cars in a little shop a house away from where I grew up in Cedar Mill, a little community on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon.
As a hobby I built model planes, ships and CARS and had a very large collection. Even as a youngster I knew it was all in the details.
I was also interested in motorsports at a young age, so you might say I was hooked!
From the time I got my first car I was always doing something to them so I gained a lot of experience with how and why things worked and disassembly and reassembly.
My dad had a lot to do with this affliction, as I helped him do a restoration on a MG TD and he helped me prep my Karman Ghia for paint, which we both did in the family garage. All of this continued through high school, but after I graduated one of my jobs was as a mechanic at an Independent VW repair shop in ‘74, and I have been working on cars as a hobby ever since.
Over the years I have helped many of my friends with the restorations of their cars and continue this today.

Areas of expertise

I have done most all of the work that each of these have needed, Mechanical, Bodywork and Paint, Upholstery, Electrical, Headliners, etc.

Recent learning

On the projects that I have underway, I even have had the opportunity to use a frame rack, And these projects needed it in the worst way.

Personal Interests

Some of the car clubs that I have been involved in:

*

356 Registry

A member since '95 even though I've owned 356's from '74 (why rush things).
Try to make it to the yearly Bull Sessions in the Northwest.

*

I've been a member of this one for over 20 years and been to a few of the West Coast meets.

*

Porsche Club of America, Oregon Region

A member since 1980, I've held every position in this club except for President,
Edited the news letter "Anzieger" for three years and regularly attended the events until the ultimate burnout as Tech Quiz Chairman for the 1995 National Porsche Parade.

Misc. Interests

There are so many things that I have interests in
it would be too hard to list them all, but here are a few:

Planes, love going to air museums when I travel
Trains, love the museums and have Garden scale and N scale layouts
Boats, like to attend boat shows and had a real nice 20'SeaSwirl Cuddy Cabin that will be upgraded someday
Landscape Gardening, with over an acre of land gives me plenty of space
Motorsports: Daytona Prototypes, Nascar, Indy cars, Champ cars, Vintage, American Lemans, if it races, I'm a fan!
Basketball, GO Blazers!!!!

I have tons of photos and stories that will eventually get up on the site in regards to many of these interests.

The Cars my wife and I have for Drivers are:

1973 Porsche 914 1.7

I bought this 914 in 1982 and have upgraded the 1.7 with, 96mm pistons/barrels and Weber carbs, balanced, blue printed, lightened the flywheel and added a Bursch exhaust.

The engine puts out about 110 hp and it really scoots.

Notice the vinyl around the windshield area, this was only offered on the 914 for the 1973 model year. This car is an early ’73 with the vin number at 167 and I am the third, fifth and seventh owner.

It has only been in three families. It was bought in Oct. ’72 at Continental Porsche-Audi in Portland, Oregon by the father of Bill Emory of Milwaulkie, Oregon from whom I purchased it in 1982.  I sold it in late ’88 to Al Watanabi of Gresham and repurchased it from him in 1990, then my son, Jim had the car from ’97 to ’99 and I got it back from him….long story!

Anyway, I think that this car is destined to be with me ‘till the end. By the way, it was named Karl by the first owner and has always been referred to by that name, trivia. This car has since been retired as my daily driver and is pushing 200,000 miles, I just bring it out in the summer now and keep it out of the rain.

1981 Porsche 911SC

This picture is of me and my wife, Ming, and our SC.

It is basically stock, the only upgrades that have been done are a set, front and rear, of Weltmiester hollow tube torsion bars, one size up from stock and the required lowering.

The addition of the  H-4 headlights and PIAA 959 fog lights on the front and euro lenses and the Duck Tail on the back.

A nice Momo sterring wheel and shift knob and a uprgaded blaupunkt am/fm/casset with a remote CD changer round out the interior.

I am the third owner of this local car and have had it since ’91, the funny thing is, I knew the original owner through the Oregon Region, Porsche Club of America. The second owner was a lady doctor who just babied it and this was the nicest SC that I found when I was looking to buy, so I bought!

1993 Mazda MX-6 LS V6

My driver, you don’t see many of these cars out there. We have had this car for eleven years and it has been a very good car. 175 hp and an three speed auto with overdrive and an average of about 25 mpg. The only problems with the car is the clear coat is failing, so it will need a repaint in the near future.
AND this is not a picture of MY car (same color though) but one off of the NET. The one we have has the short rear apoiler and different wheels. I will post a photo one of these days of the actual car, when the weather gets better.

1979 Ford F-350

The TANK, a one ton with the 460ci monster motor.

2001 Audi Quattro 2.8 V6

Ming’s driver, something safe for her to drive. This is another photo off of the NET. Our car is dark blue and has the five spoke wheels, it looks better than this black one.
We selected the tiptronic transmission for her to drive as this is a commuter AND she dosen't drive a stick, I just haven't brought myself to sacrafice a transmission to her learning curve.
