Pop Art Press Kit

1989

When I finally found a copy of the Never No 7" single in 2000, this eleven-year-old, two-page press kit was still folded up inside the sleeve.  It's not clear whether the band had any input into its creation, but it is interesting to see how their UK label, Blue Moves, was positioning them.  Both pages are on the London letterhead of Terry Hollingsworth of 10 Times Better.

***POP ART***

POP ART are from Los Angeles and formed in 1983 with the idea of making the term 'Pop Music' something to be respected instead of sneered at.  Since the band's inception they have concentrated on putting the melody and lyrical content of their music first.  In October 1984 the group released their first six-song EP on their own Stonegarden label.

This acclaimed debut was followed up with a 14 song album, 'A Perfect Mental Picture', which documented an acoustic period in the band's career.  Belieing any straight forward definitions, POP ART's next album, 'Long Walk To Nowhere', saw them using electric guitars and moving towards a more streamlined pop/rock sound.  The record's impact on Alternative Radio in America was strong, enabling it to chart high on the American Independent Radio Charts.  POP ART's latest release, the 16 song LP 'Snap Crackle Pop Art', combines the pop sensibilities of 'Long Walk to Nowhere' with the strong emotional impact of 'A Perfect Mental Picture'.

A band that is constantly writing music, POP ART has enjoyed the reputation of not fitting into a Los Angeles music scene that is usually more concerned about hair colour than it is about musical content.

POP ART are:

Jeff Steinhart - Piano, Guitar; Jeff, the oldeest of the brothers, is the principle composer and main catalyst of the band.

David Steinhart - Vocals; The lyricist and usually the unwilling spokesman for the band.

Richard Steinhart - Lead Guitar; The youngest brother but (by his own admission) the brightest band member!

Tony Ortega - Bass Guitar; Started playing when Pop Art began.

Tim Edmondson - Drummer; Sees Pop Art as 'his life's calling'!
