What is this?
This is a mileage log that I've been keeping for my
recent-model Toyota Tacoma truck.
I'm publishing it on the Web for the simple reason
that I know other
consumers
who are considering a Toyota truck are curious about what the actual
fuel efficiency of a truck such as this is.
Of course, your mileage will vary from mine because your
circumstances are different.
But to give you an idea of how I am using my truck:
- I currently use the truck mainly for commuting,
with perhaps twenty-five pounds of cargo,
plus the spare tire of course which is quite heavy, plus myself.
- I tend to use gasoline that is 10% ethanol.
- I keep the truck in good working order.
- I put a cap (shell) on the back that is higher than the cab height. This surely reduces my efficiency somewhat.
Half of my driving is done on country backroads
or in towns and about one-third on highways.
I try to use
hypermiling techniques
whenever possible to improve my fuel efficiency,
such as turning off the engine at long red lights
and coasting.
This results in my achieving about 23.5 mpg.
When I can drive mainly on highways and go less than
50 miles per hour,
my average fuel efficiency shifts up toward 30 mpg.

Conclusions
Just as I was beginning this log, I was commuting on
highways primarily and using
hypermiling techniques
religiously, hence my achieving 32 mpg.
As you can see from the log, commuting
with minimal cargo and half on backroads, half on highways,
while making a moderate effort at hypermiling
yields about 22 to 25 mpg.
