Senior Tips (taken from MSNBC May,2003)
One of the great things about getting older is the tremendous freebies and discounts for seniors! But they don’t come without the asking...there are thousands of ways to see the world, shop at beautiful stores, eat at wonderful restaurants.... and all at great discounts or some even for free! Here are some tips to remember so you can get......”the biggest bang for your buck” !!!!
TIPS
Don’t be afraid or nervous to ask if an establishment has a senior discount, sometimes they don’t advertise it...many places have every day specials, but they offer even a deeper discount for mature adults!
Always ask for the discount before purchasing a ticket or paying the entrance fee.
Make sure you always carry an ID to prove your age (since we all look so young for our ages!!!), and if you have one — a membership card to a senior’s discount club (example: AARP).
Visit venues on “Senior Day”, it usually falls during the week and during the daytime (off peak hours), when others are working.
Plan ahead...call and ask for discounts and if available, check the Internet specials too! Check local newspaper for theatre shows, concerts and museums for special hours and prices for seniors.
Don’t send or give your credit card number or checking account info to a company just because they are offering a “limited time” discount and you want to jump on board...find out the details first!
Compare prices—to ensure you are getting the best deal, call and ask for the regular price, then ask for the seniors price, if you found a lower price elsewhere — get them to match it!
Never pay the advertised price for travel (especially cruises!) unless it comes with special extras. Seniors can always receive a better rate.
Be flexible, if you are willing to go at a different time than everyone else. You will be able to travel, eat, and visit venues for less money!
Lots of times place offer “Grandparent-Grandkid” discounts too. It is a great way to spend time with your grandchild and pay a lower price!
Most important — READ THE SMALL PRINT — don’t forget the old saying “nothing comes for free.”
