Bill Vollmar Bio:
Upon graduation I joined the Navy and went to San Diego, Ca for Boot Camp. After Boot Camp I went to school in Great Lakes, for 44 weeks. During my Christmas leave Pasty Bond (Class of 54) and I were married on 20 December 1955. We had six children, four girls and two boys and saw a lot of the country. I retired from the Navy in January of 1976. During my time in the Navy I served on six different ships, four Destroyers and two Cruisers. I spent the first five years of my career on the east coast and visited the following places; Canada, Greenland, Ireland, England, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Libya, Egypt, Holland, Aden, Kuwait, Crete, Sicily, Malta, Bahrain and Cuba. In 1960 I was lucky enough to get assigned duty at White Sands Missile Range for two years. After leaving WSMR I went to more technical schools in Dam Neck, VA for 11 months. I then reported to the Naval Shipyard in San Francisco, CA for duty on the USS Chicago CG 11 as part of the pre-commissioning crew. The ship was commissioned in May of 1964 and assigned homeport in San Diego, CA. During my tour on the Chicago I was selected for appointment to Warrant Officer. After some more schooling I reported for duty as the Fire Control Officer onboard the USS Berkeley DDG 15 in Long Beach Ca. After my tour on the Berkeley I had duty at the Naval Schools Command at the Mare Island Navy Shipyard in Vallejo, CA as an instructor teaching officers in Naval Weapon Systems. After my tour at Naval Schools Command I reported to the USS Long Beach CGN 9 home ported in Long Beach, CA. During my time on the west coast I visited the following places; Guam, Midway, Japan Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, and Okinawa. After my tour on the Long Beach I was assigned to duty at the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, CA. I retired from the Navy at Seal Beach in January 1976. After retirement I worked for the Bureau of Reclamation at the power plant at Elephant Butte for four years. In December of 1976 I lost my high school sweetheart to cancer at the age of 39. In 1980 I accepted a position with a Government contractor in Oxnard, CA. It was there I met my present wife Mary. Between us we have 9 children, 22 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. In January of 2005 my wife retired from Northrop Grumman and we moved to Las Cruces. I planned to retire also but after some negotiating with the company (Northrop Grumman) I agreed to work part time and they agreed to let me work from home. I retired from Northrop Grumman in February of 2007. We are enjoying our retirement and looking forward the years ahead.
