Albertson Hi from Bill and Marie Dallas.
For more than ten years now, we have been tracing our combined family genealogies. What a wonderful experience it has been! There have been many discoveries, disappointments, joys, and frustrations along the way as we continue to uncover our family roots. And now we invite you to see the results of this ongoing quest for our ancestry.
The surnames listed to the left are those of our direct ancestors. As you can see, our children have quite a mixed European heritage! And by researching our roots, we will insure our children know just what this heritage is!
The majority of our ancestors emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania in the 1800s. The Brill, Miller, Nüchter, Diel and Leitsch families all emigrated from the Hessen province. The Brill ancestors settled in the Luzerne County area. The Diel, Leitsch, Miller, and Nüchter families settled in Allegheny City, now known as Pittsburgh.
The Bentley family immigrated to Philadelphia, PA from England in 1870. The Dallas family immigrated to Philadelphia in the 1880s from Scotland. It's rumored that the family originally came from Dallas, Scotland!
The Brzoska/Bruski, Elceser, and Kozlowski families emigrated from Poland. The Kozlowskis immigrated to the U.S. prior to 1900. They settled first in Newark, New Jersey and then moved to Philadelphia, PA about 1908. The Elcesers immigrated to Philadelphia, PA in 1912. The Brzoskas immigrated to Philadelphia, PA in 1913 from Lubotyn, Poland.
The Albertsons have been in Pennsylvania since the very early 1800s. We have not discovered the original immigrant ancestor yet, but we're working on it! So far, we've traced the family to Schuylkill County in 1870, where we've learned that the earliest ancestor we know of was born in Pennsylvania.
Two of Bill's ancestors immigrated to this country while it was still under British rule! The Shelhamer family has resided in Pennsylvania since 1753, emigrating from Germany. The Hinderliters arrived in Pennsylvania before 1740, emigrating from Upper Austria. Both families have spread out into almost every state in America.
Marie's grand-aunt saved valuable letters written from Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, some of which can be found here. And Marie's grandmother very thoughtfully left behind a written account of her early childhood in Poland and her voyage, at the age of nine years, to join her parents in Philadelphia one year after they left Poland. We are currently working on a new project! We are in the process of transcribing tombstone inscriptions for St. Valentine's Cemetery in Andalusia, Bucks Co, PA. Many families that belonged to St. Valentine's Polish National Church in the Frankford section of Philadelphia are buried in this cemetery. We have approximately half of the cemetery transcribed. Visit here to see the incomplete list of transcriptions. We hope to have this project completed and on the web site in the near future.
