About The Gryphons

The Gryphons 98G Academy is a year-round program, with players from throughout San Mateo County born between August 1, 1998 and July 31, 1999. There are currently four teams in the Gryphons 98G program -- Red, White, Blue and Black.

It has been a very busy Summer Tournament season for our Gryphons 98G. The highlight of the summer was the Championship title obtained at the prestigious San Diego Nike Surf Cup, in the U10 Girls category. Our Gryphons also were Finalists in the Mustang Stampede (Danville) and Blues Cup (San Juan Capistrano). Other first place tournament titles this summer include Santa Rosa Academy Cup, Juventus TOC, and Walnut Creek Summerfest (playing up an age group in the U11G bracket).

Our players have been working hard through the summer and are now ready for the Fall season. Our Gryphons 98G Red will participate in Abronzino Division 1 U10G and Norcal Premier Fall League (Gold bracket) U11G (playing up an age group). Our Gryphons 98G White will participate in Abronzino Division 2 U10G. Our Gryphons 98G Black will participate in Redwood League (Red bracket). Our Gryphons 98G Blue will participate in Delgado League (upper bracket).

In addition, our teams will participate in the Norcal State Cup this Fall, with Finals taking place the weekend of November 22-23. Our Gryphons 98G will also participate in Soccer by the Bay (Union City) and the fun Octo-Boo-Fest (Sacramento) tournaments this Fall, as well as D2 Cup Jamboree in December. By the end of the Fall season, our current four teams (Red, White, Black and Blue) will consolidate into three 11-a-side team rosters.

The field situation has improved significantly for our teams this Fall thanks to the club’s efforts to resolve ongoing limitations of field availability on the Peninsula. It is a real pleasure and luxury for our girls to be able to enjoy games and practices on brand new, latest generation turf fields at both Aragon and Hillsdale High School.

Other exciting news for this Fall is that we have started a water polo program for our Gryphons 98G to help with conditioning while protecting these young athletes from impact-related injuries. More than twenty players have now registered with USWP and are learning this sport, an excellent year-round complement to our soccer program. This program has been made possible thanks to the generosity of our club, the San Mateo High School District and the Hillsdale High School Water Polo Coach and AD.

Our Community

The Gryphons include girls from San Mateo, San Carlos, Belmont, Burlingame, Redwood City, and Foster City. These girls will learn to win, and will learn to lose. It is our hope that they’ll grow in self esteem and they’ll learn to respect the sport of soccer. These girls are competitive and will grow confident, but at the same time humble. They will learn to help and support each other, and they will understand that talent is not enough, that it is through hard work, commitment and dedication that goals can be achieved.

The Gryphons 98G coaching staff is dedicated to a year-round soccer program focused on adapting an age-appropriate curriculum to the players’ ability to learn. Values and principles of the Positive Coaching Alliance are encouraged at the Gryphons 98G Soccer Academy.

The Gryphons 98G parents are critical to the success of this program through their continuous support and commitment.

Our Achievements

After a busy summer schedule, the Fall of 2007 was another success for the program. The girls kept working hard, having fun, making friends and developing their soccer skills. Highlights of the Fall 2007 season include winning the Norcal State Cup U9 Championship in Sacramento; a chance to see our coaching staff dressed in Halloween costumes at the Octo-Boo-Fest tournament; and the end of the season party, which included a game to remember between the ‘Moms All-Star Team’ vs. the Gryphons 98G.

During the Fall of 2007, the 98G Red team continued playing up an age group (U10), in the Delgado League upper bracket, and finished in first place -- with a 10-0-0 record, with 54 goals for and only 2 against. The 98G White and Blue teams played in our own age group (U9) in the Redwood League; both teams tied for third place with matching 6-2-1 records.

The girls welcomed 2008 by winning their second consecutive Celtic Cup Championship in San Bernadino, California.
