My first exposure to Vizslas was Cooper's sire, Ch. Sandyacre Poquito Chile Bean, UDX, MH, MX, VC, ROM. I was impressed with his personality and accomplishments; so it would be a Chile-pup for me!
Cooper was bred by Jim and Tommie Skrintney of Covington, Lousisana. It was with great anticipation in June of 1991, that my son and I drove to Houston to meet Jim and pick a puppy. According to Rhys, Cooper picked us! From the beginning, Cooper showed a zest for life and tried hard to please me with anything he attempted. Cooper is incredibly outgoing, 'gregarious' would be a better choice of words. Cooper's pedigree backs his strengths to be successful. He thinks that pleasing me is the best thing that can happen to him. Cooper is also a "talker" and can be downright silly at times. Some people remarked, "You'd better fix that silliness". I figure that I'll need some humor as we continue to compete and work on an OTCh. and TDX.
We began our partnership with tracking. Tracking in the Southwest desert is tough, not only because of the rough terrain, but also the heat factors... and snakes! Earning a TD was the first title that I wanted, and I made it "all consuming". We succeeded in Dec. of 1992, in the freezing cold of New Mexico surrounded by 5+ inches of snow. Following that title we embarked on a Championship and training for hunt tests. Cooper has his JH and his Senior Hunter.
Cooper is my first Vizsla, and I filled our calendar with fun matches in obedience. I wanted to be as competitive as Chile Bean and Maria. May 1994 we earned our CD with good scores and multiple placements. On May 7, 1994, we attended our home show in El Paso, TX. As the morning progressed, there were some great performances in Open B. First place was a 199.5. Maria scored a 198 with Chile, which quickly prompted her challenge of , "Beat that with your Vizsla, Melissa". (We're always challenging one another; throwing down the gauntlet.) It was on that day that Cooper and I danced a 'Texas Two-Step', which blended to PERFECTION. I had no idea how well we'd done... There were equally top competitors in the ring. My nerves were completely frazzled, and I so badly wanted to qualify and get a placement... As Judge Phil Marr gave his appreciation to the stewards. etc. I really only listened for my number. I heard the number, but not the score. The applause was thunderous. I had placed first, and I did not know the score until I heard the score for the second, which was 199.5. Then it hit me! Cooper and I had earned a perfect score, a 200! He is the first Vizsla to accomplish this!
So where did we go next? On to Open and Utility and Agility. We began competing in AKC agility in September of 1995. By 1996 we were working on Master Excellent legs and in April of 1997 Cooper was the first Vizsla to earn a MX title! That was so neat! We will continue with our obedience and agility and fine tuning our TDX work.
What started out as a hobby has become a passion. Cooper is a great Vizsla buddy to share my time with.
