Proactive Systems’ Services and Graphic Model Designer support OMS and Mobile Solution Implementations at Xcel Energy

Minneapolis, MN (Jan, 2005) - Xcel Energy placed its new Outage Management System (OMS) into production in the Midwest (Xcel Energy North) on October 17, 2004 and in the Denver/Boulder area (Xcel Energy South) on January 16, 2005.  Xcel Energy met its implementation dates with a partnership of technology and services, including those provided by Proactive Systems, Inc. (PSI).

The Xcel Energy North production implementation included PSI’s Graphic Model Designer (aka “GISLite”). Xcel Energy North OMS utilizes the PSI GISLite product to model and maintain the full connectivity model of the Xcel Energy North service territory supporting more than 1.5 million customers in five states (MN, MI, ND, SD, WI). The GISLite deployment included a one-time data conversion from Xcel Energy’s legacy non-graphic Distribution Dispatch System (DDS) into an automatically generated graphic connectivity model.

The Xcel Energy South OMS implementation utilizes vendor products and PSI services to programmatically generate an OMS model from an existing Geographic Information System (GIS). PSI testing services ensured a quality product delivery to both the Xcel Energy North and Xcel Energy South business units.

The state-of-the-art PSI GISLite technology not only enabled the one-time conversion of the Xcel Energy North data, but also supports ongoing facilities management utilized by more than 15 facilities mappers, three premise specialists and 25 call agents. GISLite transitions Xcel Energy from the non-graphic mainframe base DDS database to a PC-based graphically supported and maintained facilities modeling environment. The resulting GISLite model is utilized by Xcel Energy’s new OMS system, Centricity, provided by SPL Worldgroup and new mobile solution, Advantex, provided by MDSI. Xcel Energy’s use of the PSI GISLite enabled an accelerated implementation of both the OMS and mobile solutions without waiting for Xcel Energy’s longer term GIS implementation.

Xcel Energy’s Director of Application Support, Bill Magrogan, said, “Our partnership with PSI has been a model relationship for others to follow. It’s about going above the written contract and providing tangible, value-added benefits with technology and services supporting and enabling Xcel Energy business processes. They have delivered critical components on time and have been flexible and responsive to our needs. Their advanced technology enabled a rapid deployment providing a simple-to-use and simple-to-maintain application. Both data models, North and South, have been critical elements to the overall success of each of our project implementations. PSI is a vendor we have come to know, respect and above all – trust.”

PSI’s CEO, Kevin Costin, remarked, “For a small company like PSI to partner with Xcel Energy is a huge opportunity for both parties and has potential for a longer term relationship. Long-term relationships form when the vendor continues to bring value beyond contractual obligation, and that is what we strive to perform. We bring innovative solutions through our technology and services responding to the changing needs of our partner - Xcel Energy. We have demonstrated to Xcel Energy our ability to deliver state-of-the-art technology and high caliber services. As demonstrated at Xcel Energy, a utility company using our products and services can move into new application implementations without waiting for a comprehensive GIS model to be developed, and in most cases, utilizing existing information.”
