Abbreviations in Notes

Here is an explanation of the abbreviations sometimes found in under an items "Notes".
- SOL Sticker On label often address, price or color code
- #SOL Sticker with number for slot in record carrying box affixed to record label
- TOL Tape On Label
- WOL Writing On Label
- WOPS Writing On Picture Sleeve
- XOL X On Label- A Notation usually used by radio stations
- BOOT Bootleg-Illegal copy. Usually makes use of pressing process available at time of issue. Often easy to distinguish from the real item.
- Empty Picture Sleeve - Item is Picture Sleeve without Record
- Pic Folder infrequently used low-cost way to give record "Picture sleeve" look. Usually just a 7" by 14" sheet folded over the record with pictures, info etc. and the plain sleeved record inside
- 2nd/3rd copy Multiple copies of a record-Be sure to check notes on multiple copies-They often differ in condition, sleeve type etc.
- DJ-White Label Records given to radio stations would often have a solid white (or other color) label. They also may be stamped, printed or stickered, for example, Disc Jockey Copy, Promotion Copy Advance Copy, Not for sale etc. This label notation was simply done to a regular stock copy.
- Same tune both sides Some "White Label" DJ copies have the same tune (the one being promoted as the hit) on both sides. This was done so Radio Stas. Could get twice as many plays of the A or Hit side and so they would not play the "B" side of the disc accidentally.
- Both sides same See above.
- BB Hole in label A small hole through the record label about the size of a BB. There were at least 2 reasons for them. Some distributors would have these indicate to the retailers that the item was "Non returnable". It was often sold to the retailer at a discount wholesale price, with the condition that the distributor would not take it back. In some cases, retailers had metal wire racks in which the records were bound to the racks with wires which ran through the holes.
- In Kirsch Listed in 1981 book by Don Kirsch listing and assigning value to obscure, rare and often quite valuable records. Almost all are Rock-A-Billy or better Country Rockers.Since there is a large number of picture and EP sleeves (about 31% of over 2500 records), a separate column in the inventory list shows the condition of all picture sleeves. Conditions of Records and picture sleeves are given separately. They are not tied to each other. The condition of a disc does not relate to the condition of the sleeve it's in.
