Record condition grading is considered somewhat subjective. However, after over 30 years of dealing with a wide range of interpretations for grades of condition of records, the following is the system used in this auction. The standards used for picture sleeve grading are also included here.
- M Mint-in new condition just as bought at the local store
- M- Still new but may have a non-serious scuff or slight imperfection which does not affect sound quality. For picture sleeves, "Stacking impressions" from shipment, Sleeve may show faint outline of label area on record.
- VG+ Minor nicks or scratches, shiny wax but although the record is not brand new, it produces clean, clear sound. Minor degradations of sound quality are detectable by sophisticated listeners with high quality sound systems. For Picture Sleeves, small nicks or tears or some more general indications of wear. However no more than one of these conditions should be present for a picture sleeve to retain this grade.
- VG This is the first grade, going down the scale, where slight degradation of sound quality is noticeable. The record also has some visibly evident small defects and indications of play wear.
For Picture Sleeves, This can include folded corners, some stray marks, small nicks, and/or a minor tear on a corner. However, no more than two of these conditions should be present for a picture sleeve to retain this grade.
In general, most collectors find records grading down to VG acceptable. The grades below move to where many find condition levels unacceptable.
- VG- Noticeable wear and degradation of sound quality. Visible record imperfections are now quite audible. However, If a record is very rare, collectors will often accept this grade. Since most Picture Sleeves are rarer than the records they contain and are much more perishable, collectors will often accept records in lower condition grades to acquire the picture sleeve. That is why the conditions of records and picture sleeves are listed separately here. For a picture sleeve, It must be intact, that is, completely there even if with several flaws including dog eared edges, split bottom or either side, stray writing on Pic Sleeve. It may have several defects but must be intact to retain this grade.
- G Although the G stands for "Good" the condition of the record or sleeve is anything but. There is significant wear, scratches, very noticeable degradation of sound, if the record is even playable at all. The rarest of records are often bid on if in this condition. They are often best used as wall hangings. With only a few exceptions, I did not list items grading below VG.
- G- See above.
As for Picture Sleeve Condition, the grades are explained above. The other entries are for label sleeve and plain sleeve. Label sleeve indicates that the sleeve for this item is one issued by a particular label for its own products. Although many, especially larger, established, labels have their own sleeves for their records, the sleeves here will correspond with the label brand but not necessarily with the particular sleeve type issued with that particular item.
If an item is not in a label sleeve of its own label, it is simply listed as a "Plain sleeve." A Plain sleeve listing can be a green or manila library stock sleeve, a totally plain paper sleeve or a sleeve from a different label.
