Attendees: Dave Cain, Bob Frost, Roy Koch, Pastor Norris, Carole Sarber, Bob Tierney and Pastor Wood. Note: This was a special meeting to review the preliminary layout of the FRC with an architect, Mr. Bob Frost. The meeting started at 6:30 PM.
The meeting started with
prayer. A summary of the discussion and the main conclusions of the meeting
are listed below:
Mr. Frost agreed that
bleachers or stadium seating could be installed on the side of the gym next
to the hillside. Concrete forms could be installed along the hillside to
support the seating if the hillside is solid enough. Test holes would need
to be drilled to determine if the hillside is acceptable to support the
forms. Mr. Frost thought that fiberglass stadium seats are not very expensive.
The current layout has
three levels that include a kitchen, dining
room, and youth area. Our current building has two levels (i.e. floor with
library and floor with boardroom). Mr. Frost thought that adding an additional
level is not a good idea. There would be problems with the roofline and
the construction would be expensive. A better idea would be to excavate
and add a level below the gym level. This would be much less expensive than
trying to build up. It is believed that the soil in the gym area is fill
which could be easily removed. This lower level could extend as far under
the gym as desired. Thus, if the youth area was at this lower level then
it could be much bigger than than the upper area shown on the current layout.
Also, ample room would be available for storage. This 3 level arrangement
(basement, first level adjacent to the gym, second level adjacent to current
board room) would require a elevator. Mr. Frost suggested that a new elevator
shaft be installed in this new structure. The current elevator shaft could
be made into storage closets. Another advantage of excavating is that the
soil could be used to build up the current volleyball area. This will be
used for parking and it needs to be raised closer to the new gym level.
The layout described
above would place the kitchen on the same level as the gym with the dining
room above it and the youth room below it. The elevator would make it easy
to transport food from the kitchen to the other levels. Pastor Wood suggested
that the a multi-purpose room be placed on the upper level instead of a
dining room. The plastic model shows
this area a "fireside room". Pastor Wood suggested that a good
option might be to keep the current fellowship room and kitchen as-is. This
would still be used for small dinners. He stated the it would be hard to
convert the current fellowship hall into classrooms or office space since
there is not a source for natural light.
Mr. Frost thought that
our new gym would seat about 430 for dinners. He also stated that most new
facilities like ours do not have stages. Our layout would allow events to
be conducted on the gym floor and a stage would not be necessary.
It was suggested that
we do ground borings as soon as possible to make sure that the ground will
support the gym without additional supports.
We agreed to get a copy
of the North Huntingdon Township building code book for future reference.
Mr. Frost agreed to take our list of needed rooms and to make a preliminary layout in the next couple of weeks. He will think of alternative arrangements and get back to us before the Governing Board meeting on November 11. He will also review our overall plan and let us know if it is reasonable.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM. All in attendance thanked Mr. Frost for taking the time to meet with us and for providing his expert advice.
