Building Committee Meeting

Building Committee Meeting - May 10, 2003 - 9AM

Attendees: Dave Cain, Roy Koch, Tom Mowrer, Jim Nelson, Pastor Jeff Norris, and Carole Sarber

1. Prayer

The meeting started with prayer for various needs of the church congregation and for the work of the Building Committee.

2. Review successes since last meeting

Since our last meeting Tom Mowrer has agreed to be Chairman of the Advisory Group. Also, a tour of First Free Evangelical Church in McKeesport was completed. The tour included an enlightening seminar on the church building process by Mr. Dan Zajdel.

3. Needs Survey - What is the best way for the Advisory Group to conduct this survey? When will it start? When will it be done?

This agenda item was discussed in detail. The Needs Survey is critical path to the work of this committee. It is needed before any details of the new facility are determined. It was decided to conduct this survey in two ways: a written form that will be distributed to all members and adherents of the church and a “creative planning session” held at the church on a Saturday morning. The following plan was developed to complete this work:

The Creative Planning Session will have to be well planned. Many good suggestions for conducting the session were discussed by Dan Zajdel. Detailed planning for this session will be an agenda item at the next BC meeting on June 14 at 9 A.M.

4. Facility Visits - How many other facilities should we visit? What facilities will we pick?

A visit to Mars Alliance Church is being arranged. It will likely occur on one of the remaining Saturdays in May. Other possible sites to be visited include:

Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church
Wilson Christian Academy
Word of Life Church in Greensburg
Mother of Sorrows church in Monroeville – An Activity Center is currently being constructed at this church.

It was decided to discuss further church visits at the next BC meeting after the Mars visit.

5. Review of Dan Zajdel's Seminar

The BC reviewed the building process presented by Mr. Zajdel. It was decided to make a preliminary plan based on this process. Roy Koch agreed to put together a plan and present it at the next BC meeting. The plan will lay out a timetable for all the work to be done from now until the new facility is ready for use.

6. Other Items

Two other items were discussed:

Parking will be an issue when the new facility is defined. We need to think of options in this area.

If the new facility is built it will cause much change in the church. The new facility will likely cause a large increase in church attendance. This increase can probably not be accommodated by two services on Sunday morning. We will likely need to have additional services. Also, Sunday School and the Wednesday evening programs may need to be drastically altered. The new facility might be a catalyst for starting a daughter church. It isn’t clear what the church will be like after the new facility is in place but it is clear that many changes will occur.
